Their music can be described as guitar-based singer-songwriter rock or folk-rock. It ranges from very delicate and intimate singer-songwriter songs to songs that are stronger, more active and louder. Sam’s smoky, enigmatic voice is the band's best known characteristic. In the seven years between The Great Subconscious Club and Almost Happy the music changed from raw and guitar-based to a more subtle and delicate sound. Sam and Gert write most of the music and lyrics. Most of it is written separately.
Sam mainly tries to express ideas in his songs, and has a hand in writing silly and tongue-in-cheek songs. Gert has one big theme: losing the one you love. While most of the songs are easily accessible and open, some others are strange and incomprehensible. This led Sam to comment: "Listening to the lyrics in the first time, you may find it hard to understand their meaning. When you listen to them a second time you may sense a basic truth in these cryptic words. If you do so, please let me know."

We both felt love became a word
No more than that
With sex that felt like wings without a bird
The only thing that we both love
Is in the cradle that we rock
Six hands, six feet, but just one beat
I always heard I could get hurt
(I knew that from the start)
Break my face, my back, my arms, my neck
But please don't break my heart
Break my face, my back, my arms, my neck
But please don't break my heart
Solid wood will rot
If you don't keep it from the rain
We were surprised when we found out
That love feels just like pain
I always heard I could get hurt
I knew that from the start
Break my face, my back, my arms, my neck
But please don't break my heart
Break my face, my back, my arms, my neck
But please don't break my heart
Greetz dustin the wind
Angelke I love you
In K's Choice's song "My Heart", the lyrics describe the evolution of love between two individuals. The song begins by acknowledging that at one point, love was merely a word for them and that sex had lost its meaning. However, now there is a new love in their life, their child, who is the only thing that they both love unconditionally. The ticking of the clock becomes a metaphor for the time they spend together as a family and reminds them that they should cherish every moment they have.
The song then introduces the idea that love can be painful and that it requires effort and attention, like solid wood that will rot if exposed to the rain. The fear of getting hurt is present throughout the song, but the singer's plea is not to break their heart, even if their face, back, arms, or neck get hurt. This implies that physical pain is bearable, but emotional pain is much harder to overcome.
Overall, "My Heart" expresses the fragility of love and relationships while also recognizing the beauty and pureness of unconditional love for one's child.
