Their music can be described as guitar-based singer-songwriter rock or folk-rock. It ranges from very delicate and intimate singer-songwriter songs to songs that are stronger, more active and louder. Sam’s smoky, enigmatic voice is the band's best known characteristic. In the seven years between The Great Subconscious Club and Almost Happy the music changed from raw and guitar-based to a more subtle and delicate sound. Sam and Gert write most of the music and lyrics. Most of it is written separately.
Sam mainly tries to express ideas in his songs, and has a hand in writing silly and tongue-in-cheek songs. Gert has one big theme: losing the one you love. While most of the songs are easily accessible and open, some others are strange and incomprehensible. This led Sam to comment: "Listening to the lyrics in the first time, you may find it hard to understand their meaning. When you listen to them a second time you may sense a basic truth in these cryptic words. If you do so, please let me know."

I tried to fly and I couldn't stop
I felt the air blowing through my time
with you
I found a heart in a solid rock
I tried to show you but you wouldn't stop
I should've known you then
I should've known you then
Try me out
Keep me if you like me now
There's always gonna be some doubt
It's never gonna be just perfect
I lost my head in a bidding war
I don't remember what I wanted you for
I felt the air blowing through my need for you
I looked ahead to someone new
I tried to move but I stumbled on you
I should've known you then
I should've known you then
Try me out
Keep me if you like me now
There's always gonna be some doubt
It's never gonna be just perfect
Take me out
Take me if you want me now
There's always gonna be some doubt
It's never gonna be just perfect
No
I don't want to be easy like this
No
No
No
Try me out
Keep me if you like me now
There's always gonna be some doubt
It's never gonna be just perfect
Take me out
And take me if you want me now
There's always gonna be some doubt
It's never gonna be just perfect
In "Perfect," K's Choice sings about the imperfections and uncertainties that come with falling in love. The opening lines describe the feeling of being so overwhelmed with emotion that it's like losing one's head on a mountain top - attempting to fly but ultimately crashing down. Despite this, the singer finds a heart in the solid rock, perhaps alluding to a newfound sense of stability in their love life. However, despite their efforts to show their love to their partner, they don't reciprocate - leaving the singer with the feeling that they should have seen this coming.
The chorus begins with some hesitation - "try me out / keep me if you like me now / there's always gonna be some doubt / it's never gonna be just perfect." Here, the singer reveals their insecurities about the relationship, acknowledging that there will always be some degree of uncertainty - a fear of not measuring up to expectations. In the second half of the song, the singer reflects on their past mistakes and decisions, perhaps questioning why they didn't see the warning signs before. They end the song by reiterating the idea that the relationship might never fit their ideal version of "perfect", but they refuse to settle for something easy and insincere.
Overall, "Perfect" is a thoughtful reflection on the complexities of love and how it's rarely as easy or straightforward as we hope it will be. The lyrics touch on themes of insecurity, vulnerability, and acceptance of imperfection. The song's instrumentation is straightforward, with acoustic guitar and drums grounding the vocals in a solid rhythm. The overall effect is a contemplative ballad that encourages listeners to embrace the uncertainties of love and cherish the moments even when they're not "perfect".
