Their music can be described as guitar-based singer-songwriter rock or folk-rock. It ranges from very delicate and intimate singer-songwriter songs to songs that are stronger, more active and louder. Sam’s smoky, enigmatic voice is the band's best known characteristic. In the seven years between The Great Subconscious Club and Almost Happy the music changed from raw and guitar-based to a more subtle and delicate sound. Sam and Gert write most of the music and lyrics. Most of it is written separately.
Sam mainly tries to express ideas in his songs, and has a hand in writing silly and tongue-in-cheek songs. Gert has one big theme: losing the one you love. While most of the songs are easily accessible and open, some others are strange and incomprehensible. This led Sam to comment: "Listening to the lyrics in the first time, you may find it hard to understand their meaning. When you listen to them a second time you may sense a basic truth in these cryptic words. If you do so, please let me know."

In everyone and in your head
On the wall it ain't white
In every letter that you write
In the way people talk
In the shape of stones and rocks
He's your hero he's your God
In a voice in a sound
When you're happy when you're down
It will pass things will change
But you don't want to hear that
In the scent of the air
On the clothes that people wear
You feel love, so does he
And he's telling you, "I'm here", "I'm here"
He's here, he's here
Lalala, Lalala
The lyrics to K's Choice's song "Song For Catherine" address the concept of finding comfort and solace in a person's memory or spirit that lives on after they have passed away. The song suggests that the memory of the person is omnipresent and exists in everything, from one's dreams and thoughts to the way people talk and the scent of the air. The lyrics describe the sensations and emotions that one feels when thinking of this person: happiness, sadness, love, and a desire to hold onto the memory.
The song repeatedly refers to "he" as the person who has passed away, and describes him as a hero or God-like figure. The mention of him "listening to this song and nods, and nods" suggests that he is still present in some way and acknowledging the sentiment being expressed. However, the lyrics also acknowledge the bittersweet nature of holding onto a memory, as the person singing the song doesn't want to hear that "it will pass" and things will change. The final repetition of "he's here" is both a reassurance and a plea to hold onto the memory of the person.
