Their music can be described as guitar-based singer-songwriter rock or folk-rock. It ranges from very delicate and intimate singer-songwriter songs to songs that are stronger, more active and louder. Sam’s smoky, enigmatic voice is the band's best known characteristic. In the seven years between The Great Subconscious Club and Almost Happy the music changed from raw and guitar-based to a more subtle and delicate sound. Sam and Gert write most of the music and lyrics. Most of it is written separately.
Sam mainly tries to express ideas in his songs, and has a hand in writing silly and tongue-in-cheek songs. Gert has one big theme: losing the one you love. While most of the songs are easily accessible and open, some others are strange and incomprehensible. This led Sam to comment: "Listening to the lyrics in the first time, you may find it hard to understand their meaning. When you listen to them a second time you may sense a basic truth in these cryptic words. If you do so, please let me know."

White Kite Fauna
K's Choice Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Late at night
Children crying they've lost their kite
They're left with nothing but
Giant lizards
Eating deer
Growing appetite as they notice that
Lizards' eyes reflection
Shows a glimpse of imperfection
Through the spastic sighs of innocence
Of deer's blood and it's cruel attraction
White kite fauna do you feel
White kite fauna is it real
Is it real
In a dark well
I found a kite
Bloodstained, so beautiful
Recognizable
I close my eyes and
I perceive
Marble emptiness
Looking for my soul to bless
Lizards' eyes reflection
Shows a glimpse of imperfection
Through the spastic sighs of innocence
Of deer's blood and it's cruel attraction
White kite fauna, do you feel
White kite fauna, is it real
White kite fauna, do you feel
White kite fauna, will it heal
Will it heal
In a dark well
Late at night
I am crying
I've lost my kite
Left with nothing
The lyrics to K's Choice's song "White Kite Fauna" tell a haunting tale of loss and despair. The song begins in a dark well late at night, where distressed children are crying as they realize they have lost their beloved kite. They are left with nothing but giant lizards who are devouring helpless deer with a growing appetite. The imagery is unsettling, and the visual of the lizards reflecting in the deer's eyes as they consume them is particularly disturbing. The "spastic sighs of innocence" are juxtaposed with the brutality of the predators' actions. The children cry as they feel the loss of their cherished kite, while the lizards continue to consume their prey without a second thought.
The second half of the song sees the singer finding a bloodstained kite in the well. The kite is both beautiful and recognizable, and the singer closes their eyes to take it in. The marble emptiness that is felt indicates a sense of loss, while the lizards' eyes reflect imperfection again. The white kite fauna is a symbol of hope and healing, but the singer is left questioning whether it is real or just a fleeting dream.
Overall, "White Kite Fauna" is a deeply emotive and thought-provoking exploration of grief, loss, and the brutal realities of nature. The song evokes a sense of melancholy with its vivid imagery and poetic lyrics.
