When I was just a little girl
As a child, I had an experience that influenced my outlook on life.

My mama used to tuck me into bed
My mother took care of me during my childhood.

And she'd read me a story
As part of our bedtime routine, my mother would read me fictional stories.

It always was about a princess in distress
The stories my mother read me typically involved a princess or woman in need of rescue.

And how a guy would save her
The plot of these stories typically involved a male hero rescuing the princess.

And end up with her glory
The male hero was often rewarded with the love and admiration of the princess.

I'd lie in bed and think about the person
As I lay in bed, I would reflect on my own identity and desires.

That I wanted to be
I had an idea of the kind of person I wanted to become.

Then one day I realized that fairy tale life wasn't for me
As I matured, I came to understand that the idealized, fictional life portrayed in those stories was not achievable or desirable.

I don't want to be like Cinderella
I do not want to be a passive character who relies on someone else to control my fate.

Sittin' in a dark cold dusty cellar
I do not want to be confined to a dark, neglected space where I have no control over my circumstances.

Waitin' for somebody to come and set me free
I do not want to depend on someone else to rescue me from the situation I am in.

I don't want to be like someone waiting
I refuse to be someone who passively waits for others to take action on my behalf.

For a handsome prince to come and save me
I do not want to seek out a partner solely for the sake of being rescued or protected.

I know that I am capable of overcoming challenges and taking care of myself.

Unless somebody's on my side
While I am self-sufficient, I am open to receiving support from others who share my goals.

I reject the idea of conforming to someone else's expectations or ideals.

I would prefer to take ownership of my own life and be the one to solve my own problems.

I am looking for someone who values me as a whole person, not just for my physical appearance or social status.

My ideal partner will value and respect the choices I make for my own life, and will not attempt to change me or control me.

Don't need nobody taking care of me
While I am open to receiving support and camaraderie from others, I do not require anyone else to take care of me.

I will be there for him just as strong as he will be there for me
In any healthy relationship, both partners support and uplift each other equally.

When I get myself ready it has got to be an equally
Before entering into a romantic partnership, I will make sure that I am secure in my own identity and strength.
