The group's earliest incarnation included German drummer En Esch and British vocalist Raymond Watts, the latter of whom left and rejoined the group several times over its history. The trio recorded the band's earliest albums in Germany before Konietzko and Esch moved to the United States, where they found much greater success with seminal industrial record label Wax Trax!. German guitarist Günter Schulz joined in 1990; both he and Esch continued with the band until KMFDM broke up in 1999. Konietzko resurrected KMFDM in 2002 (Esch and Schulz declined to rejoin) on Metropolis Records, and by 2005 he had assembled a consistent line-up that included American singer Lucia Cifarelli, British guitarists Jules Hodgson and Steve White, and British drummer Andy Selway. Konietzko and Cifarelli moved back to Germany in 2007, while the rest of band stayed in the U.S. In addition to these core members, dozens of other musicians have worked with the group across its nineteen studio albums and two dozen singles, with sales totaling in excess of two million records worldwide.
Critics consider KMFDM to be one of the first bands to bring industrial music to mainstream audiences, though Konietzko refers to the band's music as "The Ultra-Heavy Beat". The band incorporates heavy metal guitar riffs, electronic music, samples, and both male and female vocals in its music, which encompasses a variety of styles including industrial rock and electronic body music (EBM). The band is fiercely political, with many of its lyrics taking stands against violence, war, and oppression. KMFDM normally tours at least once after every major release, and band members are known for their accessibility to and interaction with fans, both online and at concerts. Members, singly or working together and with other musicians, have recorded under many other names, primarily Watts' PIG, Konietzko's Excessive Force, and Esch and Schulz's Slick Idiot.

Amnesia
KMFDM Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Not a place to hide
Black widow, butterfly
You're free till winter falls on me
Set the clock
Make you believe
I hold the power to deceive
Left behind
Time to waste
Burrowed in a fallen saint
I have not a memory in my heart
No control, don't recall
Who or what I was before
Fill me without guilt
I won't repent
No eye has seen
Ear has heard
I cannot imagine her
A wanton womb of sick that won't give up
Arcane amputee
Bathing in depravity
Blind, torture, kill
I won't repent
Urgency
Emergency
Insurgency
Amnesia
The lyrics to KMFDM's Amnesia paint a dark and foreboding picture of someone who is trapped in a situation with no escape. The opening lines, "Nowhere to run, not a place to hide, black widow, butterfly, you're free till winter falls on me," suggest that the singer is being hunted by someone or something, and that their freedom is temporary. The next lines, "Set the clock, make you believe, I hold the power to deceive, your wings rest fragile in my hands," imply that the singer's captor has a twisted sense of control over them, and that they are able to manipulate and deceive them at will.
The chorus of the song, "No control, don't recall, who or what I was before, fill me without guilt, I won't repent," suggests that the singer has lost all sense of themselves and their past, and that they have resigned themselves to their current situation. The lines, "No eye has seen, ear has heard, I cannot imagine her, a wanton womb of sick that won't give up," paint a disturbing image of a woman who is sick and twisted, and who is perpetuating the singer's captivity. The final lines, "Arcane amputee, bathing in depravity, blind, torture, kill, I won't repent," suggest that the singer has either given in to their captor's demands, or that they have accepted their fate and are now content to remain trapped.
Overall, the lyrics to Amnesia are a potent and unsettling commentary on the nature of captivity and powerlessness. The singer is trapped in a situation that they cannot escape, and their captor has control over them in a way that is both disturbing and perverse. The song's haunting melody and powerful lyrics make it one of KMFDM's most memorable tracks.
