The group's earliest incarnation included German drummer En Esch and British vocalist Raymond Watts, the latter of whom left and rejoined the group several times over its history. The trio recorded the band's earliest albums in Germany before Konietzko and Esch moved to the United States, where they found much greater success with seminal industrial record label Wax Trax!. German guitarist Günter Schulz joined in 1990; both he and Esch continued with the band until KMFDM broke up in 1999. Konietzko resurrected KMFDM in 2002 (Esch and Schulz declined to rejoin) on Metropolis Records, and by 2005 he had assembled a consistent line-up that included American singer Lucia Cifarelli, British guitarists Jules Hodgson and Steve White, and British drummer Andy Selway. Konietzko and Cifarelli moved back to Germany in 2007, while the rest of band stayed in the U.S. In addition to these core members, dozens of other musicians have worked with the group across its nineteen studio albums and two dozen singles, with sales totaling in excess of two million records worldwide.
Critics consider KMFDM to be one of the first bands to bring industrial music to mainstream audiences, though Konietzko refers to the band's music as "The Ultra-Heavy Beat". The band incorporates heavy metal guitar riffs, electronic music, samples, and both male and female vocals in its music, which encompasses a variety of styles including industrial rock and electronic body music (EBM). The band is fiercely political, with many of its lyrics taking stands against violence, war, and oppression. KMFDM normally tours at least once after every major release, and band members are known for their accessibility to and interaction with fans, both online and at concerts. Members, singly or working together and with other musicians, have recorded under many other names, primarily Watts' PIG, Konietzko's Excessive Force, and Esch and Schulz's Slick Idiot.

KMFDM Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Take my toll and break my fall
Come and join my little war
You could be my broken whore
I do not need express excess
I do not need your sordid sex
I do not need to hear your cries
'Coz you hurt me
When I'm dirty
Come on hurt me
'Coz I'm dirty
Heaven can't take me
Hell don't care
KMFDM
Gonna take me there
Is your lie
Is your high
Gonna drink you dry?
You'll crawl and die
Do you want
Do you pain
Do you need in your vain?
To release the relapse
To reload and collapse
A little joke
We're getting flirty
A it of rope
And now we're dirty
The lyrics of KMFDM's song Dirty seem to be a critique of society's obsession with excess and its relentless pursuit of pleasure without any regard for emotional consequences. The first verse opens with an invitation to "take my toll and break my fall", suggesting that the singer is willing to sacrifice everything for a fleeting moment of pleasure. The second line "Come and join my little war" can be interpreted as an invitation to indulge in hedonism with him, something he sees as a battle between the mind and the body. The following line, "You could be my broken whore" is a sexual allusion and the singer's way of objectifying his partner, who he sees as nothing more than a tool for his pleasure.
The first three lines of the second verse indicate that the singer is trying to distance himself from his partner's emotional attachment, feeling that their relationship is purely physical. He does not want to hear her cries or see her squirm, which implies that her pleasure doesn't matter. The chorus, which is repeated throughout the song, says, "Coz you hurt me/When I'm dirty/Come on, hurt me/Coz I'm dirty". This may imply that the singer feels most alive when he is engaging in depraved activities and being hurt or hurting someone else in the process. The bridge, including the lines "Heaven can't take me/Hell don't care/KMFDM/Gonna take me there" could be interpreted as a representation of the singer's reckless state of mind and the internalized chaos this creates.
