The group's earliest incarnation included German drummer En Esch and British vocalist Raymond Watts, the latter of whom left and rejoined the group several times over its history. The trio recorded the band's earliest albums in Germany before Konietzko and Esch moved to the United States, where they found much greater success with seminal industrial record label Wax Trax!. German guitarist Günter Schulz joined in 1990; both he and Esch continued with the band until KMFDM broke up in 1999. Konietzko resurrected KMFDM in 2002 (Esch and Schulz declined to rejoin) on Metropolis Records, and by 2005 he had assembled a consistent line-up that included American singer Lucia Cifarelli, British guitarists Jules Hodgson and Steve White, and British drummer Andy Selway. Konietzko and Cifarelli moved back to Germany in 2007, while the rest of band stayed in the U.S. In addition to these core members, dozens of other musicians have worked with the group across its nineteen studio albums and two dozen singles, with sales totaling in excess of two million records worldwide.
Critics consider KMFDM to be one of the first bands to bring industrial music to mainstream audiences, though Konietzko refers to the band's music as "The Ultra-Heavy Beat". The band incorporates heavy metal guitar riffs, electronic music, samples, and both male and female vocals in its music, which encompasses a variety of styles including industrial rock and electronic body music (EBM). The band is fiercely political, with many of its lyrics taking stands against violence, war, and oppression. KMFDM normally tours at least once after every major release, and band members are known for their accessibility to and interaction with fans, both online and at concerts. Members, singly or working together and with other musicians, have recorded under many other names, primarily Watts' PIG, Konietzko's Excessive Force, and Esch and Schulz's Slick Idiot.

Spit Sperm
KMFDM Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
THE BOTTLE MAKES THE FINAL CALL
FUEL ME WITH SOME OF YOUR KISSES
TURN TOWARDS THE WEEPING WALL
DISTILLED WITHIN YOUR DISCIPLINE
RETURN TO GO AND START AGAIN
BLEEDING ON YOUR HALLOWED GROUND
I'M GONNA LAY THIS SODDEND SOUL RIGHT DOWN IN...
SPIT SPERM SPIT
YOUR TV IS MY TEACHER
CONFESSIONAL AND PREACHER
FORGIVE ME LORD FOR ALL THIS HATE
I SIMPLY AM INEBRIATE
SEE THE GUN
PICK IT UP
ALL DAY LONG YOU'LL HAVE GOOD LUCK
SEE THE GUN
LET IT LIE
YOU'LL WANT THAT GUN BEFORE YOU DIE
SPIT SPERM
THIS MORAL BANKRUPT STINKING VAT
SPIT SPERM
OF SHIT-FUELED LIES AND EMPTY HIGHS
SPIT SPERM
BLED BETWEEN THESE PISS STAINED LINES
SPIT SPERM
AND HID BEHIND MY GLAZING EYES
The lyrics to KMFDM's song "Spit Sperm" seem to speak to a sense of desperation and self-destruction, with references to alcoholism and violence. The first line, "I keep account of my hits and my misses," suggests a level of self-awareness, but it is quickly undermined by the following line, "the bottle makes the final call." The singer is in the thrall of their addiction, seeking solace in the embrace of someone who might "fuel [them] with some of [their] kisses." But even in this moment of intimacy, the singer cannot escape their own feelings of shame and self-loathing, "distilled within your discipline, return to go and start again." It's as if the singer is caught in a loop, unable to break free from their own destructive patterns.
The chorus, "spit sperm spit," is ambiguous in its meaning, but it feels like a kind of primal scream, an expression of frustration and anger. The following lines reference both religion and violence, with the singer calling the TV their "teacher" and "confessional and preacher," and asking for forgiveness, even as they acknowledge their own drunkenness. The couplet, "see the gun/pick it up," is a chilling moment, evoking images of shootings and bloodshed. The singer seems almost to be daring the listener to engage in violent acts, while also warning them of the dangers. The repeated refrain of "spit sperm" feels like a kind of curse, a condemnation of the world and its emptiness.
Overall, the song feels like a desperate cry into a void, a recognition of the darkness both within and beyond oneself. It's a powerful and disturbing work, one that leaves a lasting impression.
