Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
I heard he sang a good song
And so I came to see him
And listen for a while
And there he was this young boy
A stranger to my eyes
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
I felt all flushed with fever
Embarrassed by the crowd
I felt he found my letters
And read each one out loud
I prayed that he would finish
But he just kept right on
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Is killing me softly with his song
Is telling my whole life with his words
Is killing me softly with his song
Ooh... lalalala-lala-la-lala
Lalalala-lalalala
Doorooroo-dadada-lalalala
Oh... lalalala
Doo-doo-dadada-lalalala
Oh... lalalala
Killing me softly with his song
Strumming my pain, woah... oh...
He was singing my life, yeah...
Killing me softly with his song
Is killing me softly with his song
Is telling my whole life with his words
Is killing me softly with his song
The song "Killing Me Softly" by KZ Tandingan, originally by Roberta Flack, is a portrayal of the transformative impact music can have on an individual's life. The lyrics communicate a sense of mesmerization and enchantment that Flack, now Tandingan, experiences upon hearing a young boy sing. The power that the boy wields over her through his song is overwhelming, as he strikes chords within her by "strumming [her] pain with his fingers" and "singing [her] life with his words."
Throughout the song, the lyrics bear witness to the singer's vulnerability and sense of exposure in front of a public audience. The power and potential for pain that music holds are highlighted with lines like "feeling all flushed with fever / embarrassed by the crowd." Despite this, she cannot help but feel enthralled, entranced, and "killed softly" by the song. The lyrics depict an experience of being moved and impacted by the words and music of another individual, and the power of such a connection and influence.
