I used ash mixed with sawdust. I then mixed that into new top soil. My grass turned to a very healthy green. Where I didn't do this, the grass was light green with a lot of thatch still showing. All of the lawn received the same fertilizer treatment

My understanding is that charcoal is okay as long as it's natural wood ash with no chemical additives.
