High Time
Kacey Musgraves Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To slow my roll
Let the grass just grow and lean way back
It's a fine time
Yeah, to let it all go
I've been too low, so it's high time
Been missing my roots
Nobody needs a thousand-dollar suit just to take out the trash
Ain't gotta be alone to feel lonely
I'm gonna turn off my phone, start catching up with the old me
It's high time
To slow my roll
Let the grass just grow and lean way back
And it's a fine time
To let it all go
I've been too low, so it's high time
We've been all wrong
Just wanna feel alright
Tomorrow, I might come crashing down
But for tonight
It's high time
To slow my roll
Let the grass just grow and lean way back
And it's a fine time
To let it all go
I've been too low, so it's high time
I'm gonna let it all go
I've been too low, so it's high time
The song "High Time" by Kacey Musgraves is a reflection on the need for slowing down and taking life at a less hectic pace. The opening lines symbolize the need for rest and the acceptance that sometimes we need to let things be to allow nature to take its course. In the chorus, she emphasizes the sentiment by repeating that it's a fine time to let go of all that is holding her down and just be. Musgraves' tone is remorseful as she admits that she has been too low, and it's high time to pick herself up and start living life to the fullest.
The second verse continues with the theme of returning to one's roots, something close to Musgraves' heart, as she hails from a small town in Texas. She regrets becoming too caught up in material things, such as having the latest gadgets and designer clothes, and says it's unnecessary. She urges the need for human connection to avoid feeling lonely, and to do that, she needs to disconnect from the world, turning off her phone, and spending time with herself. The song has a message of being in the moment, enjoying life and reconnecting with one's values, all delivered in Musgraves' signature style of country music with a twinge of pop.
