Merry Go
Kacey Musgraves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you ain't got two kids by twenty-one
You're probably gonna die alone
Least that's what tradition told you
And it don't matter if you don't believe
Come Sunday morning, you best be there
In the front row, like you're s'posed to

Same hurt in every heart
Same trailer, different park

Mama's hooked on Mary Kay
Brother's hooked on Mary Jane
And daddy's hooked on Mary two doors down
Mary, Mary, quite contrary
We get bored, so we get married
And just like dust, we settle in this town
On this broken merry go 'round and 'round and 'round we go
Where it stops, nobody knows
And it ain't slowin' down
This merry go 'round

We think the first time's good enough
So we hold on to high school love
Say we won't end up like our parents
Tiny little boxes in a row
Ain't what you want, it's what you know
Just happy in the shoes you're wearin'

Same checks we're always cashin'
To buy a little more distraction

Cause mama's hooked on Mary Kay
Brother's hooked on Mary Jane
And daddy's hooked on Mary two doors down
Mary, Mary, quite contrary
We get bored, so we get married
And just like dust, we settle in this town
On this broken merry go 'round and 'round and 'round we go
Where it stops, nobody knows
And it ain't slowin' down
This merry go 'round

Mary, Mary, quite contrary
We're so bored until we're buried
And just like dust, we settle in this town
On this broken merry go 'round
Merry go 'round

Jack and Jill went up the hill
Jack burned out on booze and pills

And Mary had a little lamb
Mary just don't give a damn no more

Overall Meaning

Kacey Musgraves' "Merry Go 'Round" is a commentary on the cyclical nature of life in a small town, where expectations and traditions are so deeply ingrained that individuals don't question them. The song begins with the blunt message that if you don't have children by the age of 21, you're going to die alone, as per tradition. The chorus asserts that the same struggles and tragedies affect everyone in the town, despite the superficial variations in their lives. The repetition of "Mary" in the verses brings to mind the nursery rhyme's turbulent narrative as well as the commonality of names in small towns. The song's narrator speaks to the monotony and lack of progress in the lives of townsfolk who are resigned to their lots in life.

Kacey Musgraves creates a vivid picture of the stagnation and conformity that can occur in small towns. She paints a picture of the town's inhabitants who are trapped in their respective vices, such as Mama's addiction to Mary Kay cosmetics, Daddy's addiction to the neighbor Mary, and Brother's addiction to marijuana. The singer suggests that the townsfolk's boredom drives them to marriage, which becomes a key instrument in upholding the town's traditions. The bridge is a series of nursery rhyme inspirations that speak of the tragic outcomes that befall the characters. The final line, "Mary just don't give a damn no more," indicates a general disinterest in change or progress.

If you ain't got two kids by 21,
You're probably gonna die alone
Least that's what tradition told you

And it don't matter if you don't believe,
Come Sunday morning, you best be there
In the front row, like you're supposed to

Same hurt in every heart
Same trailer, different park

Mama's hooked on Mary Kay
Brother's hooked on Mary Jane

Where it stops nobody knows
And it ain't slowin' down
This merry go 'round

We think the first time's good enough
So, we hold on to high school love.
Sayin' we won't end up like our parents

Tiny little boxes in a row
Ain't what you want, it's what you know
Just happy in the shoes you're wearin'

Same checks we're always cashin'
To buy a little more distraction

The song has a great melody, but even more interesting is that it is very honest in its criticism of small town life. It seems to be in fashion, especially recently, for country stars to idealize rural life as somehow morally superior to an urban existence. It is a breathe of fresh air to see such candor about how the cultural expectations of "country folk" can be stifling and oppressive.

I still don't understand how this wasnt a hit. This song deserves the same amount as Little Big Town's Girl Crush. The best song she's every written imo

@RPGonline2

It gained some traction on country radio, I remember hearing it shortly after it was released and that's how I found out about Kacey, fell in love with her after that first listen! And it did receive repeated airplay for a while. But it is a disappointment how it wasn't a smash hit or even a blip on the radar beyond country radio. Kacey deserves huge success. She is an amazing artist.

@geek_of_century4563

whizzard blizzard I never liked the song girl crush it's about being lesbian like seriously who gives a shit people should be listening to stuff like this it actually has a meaning that isn't hey I'm lesbian or gay that's all it seems to be about now a days

@Nogdog945

It's all about the cookie cutter bullshit in the any multi million dollar industry. Either you conform to what the people who sit in chairs say... or you can take your ass somewhere else... but we fans may like it doesn't mean they'll play it on the radio... the companies have a specific image they want
