Silver Lining
Kacey Musgraves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Woke up on the wrong side of rock bottom
You're all out of pennies, and the well it done run dry
Light 'em up and smoke 'em if you had 'em, but you just ain't got 'em
Ain't we always looking for a bluer sky

If you're ever gonna find a silver lining
It's gotta be a cloudy day
It's gotta be a cloudy day
If you wanna fill your bottle up with lightning
You're gonna have to stand in the rain
You're gonna have to stand in the rain

Lemonade keeps turning into lemons
And you wear your heart on a ripped unraveled sleeve
Been rung through the ringer and pushed up to your limit
You say you're just unlucky, but luck ain't what you need

'Cause if you're ever gonna find a four leaf clover
You gotta get a little dirt on your hands
You gotta get a little dirt on your hands
If you wanna find a head to fit your shoulder
You're gonna have to go to the dance
Gonna have to go to the dance

If you wanna find the honey
You can't be scared of bees
And if you wanna see the forest
You're gonna have to look past the trees
Baby

If you're ever gonna find a silver lining
It's gotta be a cloudy day
It's gotta be a cloudy day
And if you wanna fill your bottle up with lightning
You're gonna have to stand in the rain
Gonna have to stand in the rain, ooh ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh

Overall Meaning

In Kacey Musgraves's song "Silver Lining," she examines the idea that sometimes in life, we have to go through tough times in order to appreciate the good ones. The first verse sets the scene of feeling at rock bottom with no hope for improvement. However, Musgraves suggests that to find the silver lining, we have to accept that we may have to endure a cloudy day (symbolic for difficult times) in order to appreciate the good ones. She repeats this idea in the chorus and reinforces the notion that sometimes in order to find success or happiness, you have to go through struggles and face difficulties.

Musgraves uses a number of metaphors throughout the song to convey the idea of pushing through hardship to get to the other side. In the second verse, she compares life to lemonade and suggests that sometimes things can turn sour on us. However, by persevering and pushing through difficult moments, we can find our way to a better place. She also suggests that to find true happiness or success, we have to be willing to take risks and get our hands dirty. The final verse brings it all together, emphasizing that to find joy in life, we have to be willing to face the challenges that come our way.

Overall, "Silver Lining" is a song about persevering despite difficult times, and about the importance of understanding that sometimes the road to happiness and success is not an easy one. Through the use of powerful metaphors and catchy lyrics, Musgraves encourages listeners to keep pushing and to keep searching for the silver lining on even the cloudiest of days.
