breadwinner
Kacey Musgraves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here's what he'll do
He'll play it cool
When he hangs out with a woman like you
Say he ain't pressed by all your success
Tell you he's different than all of the rest

You're gonna give it all and give it all
But you won't get it back
I'm telling you, it's gonna hurt
Stay away from a boy like that

He wants a breadwinner
He wants your dinner
Until he ain't hungry anymore
He wants your shimmer
To make him feel bigger
Until he starts feeling insecure
I wish somebody would've told me the truth
See, he's never gonna know what to do
With a woman like you
With a woman like you

I see the games a mile away
They only end when another heart breaks
But all of his wounds ain't an excuse
For you to put up with how he treats you

You're gonna give it all and give it all
But you won't get it back
I'm telling you, it's gonna hurt
Stay away from a boy like that

He wants a breadwinner
He wants your dinner
Until he ain't hungry anymore
He wants your shimmer
To make him feel bigger
Until he starts feeling insecure
I wish somebody would've told me the truth
See, he's never gonna know what to do
With a woman like you
With a woman like you

I can sleep at night
Knowing I really tried
I put in the time
But the fault isn't mine

That he wants a (breadwinner)
(He wants your dinner)
(Until he ain't hungry anymore)
(Anymore)

He wants a breadwinner
He wants your dinner
Until he ain't hungry anymore (anymore)
He wants your shimmer
To make him feel bigger
Until he starts feeling insecure
I wish somebody would've told me the truth
See, he's never gonna know what to do
With a woman like you
With a woman like you

With a woman like you

And me
He likes what he sees

Overall Meaning

In the song "Breadwinner", Kacey Musgraves warns women about the dangers of being with a man who is only interested in their success and what they can provide for him. She accurately describes the types of behaviors he will use to try and woo them, such as playing it cool and pretending not to be impressed by their accomplishments. The guy in question wants to be with a woman who is highly successful and accomplished, but he does not want to put in any effort to maintain that relationship. He wants her to be the breadwinner, to make him dinner, and to make him feel important until he inevitably becomes insecure and ruins everything. Kacey wisely advises women to stay away from a boy like that and to not give everything they have to someone who will not give it back in return.

One of the most striking elements of this song is the honesty with which Kacey Musgraves delivers the message. She acknowledges that these types of men exist, and they will take advantage of women who are willing to give them everything. She encourages listeners to be realistic about their relationships and to avoid chasing after someone who is only interested in what they can provide. The song also embodies a powerful theme of female empowerment, as Kacey urges women to recognize their self-worth and not settle for anything less than they deserve.

Sadly there’s still a lot of men that say they want a successful partner but if you get too successful they feel insecure and start pushing those insecurities on you. Fortunately the guys in my life aren’t like that but damn
