Walking to the 7-Eleven
Me and all of my best friends
We were always together
I remember talking on the phone all night
Didn't know it was a simple time
Wish that I could put this game on pause
Put my lip gloss on
Kick it at the mall like there's nothing wrong
I need to step away
If I don't, I'm gonna go insane
'Cause being grown up kind of sucks
And I'm really just missing the simple times, uh huh
I think I'm going off of the deep end
I wanna wake up on an island
Throw everybody a peace sign
Put all the static on silent
We could stay up all night
Pour one out for the simple times
Wish that I could put this game on pause
Skip this round, take the headset off
Put my lip gloss on
Kick it at the mall like there's nothing wrong
I need to step away
And if I don't, I'm gonna go insane
'Cause being grown up kind of sucks
And I'm really just missing the simple times, uh huh
There's nothing really going on
But I heard about a rager
I won't be waiting by the phone
So you can hit me on the pager
Wish that I could put this game on pause
Skip this round, take the headset off
Put my high-tops on
Kick it at the mall like there's nothing wrong
I need to step away
If I don't, I'm gonna go insane
'Cause being grown up kind of sucks
And I'm really just missing the simple times, uh huh
Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, yeah
In "Simple Times," Kacey Musgraves reminisces about a simpler time when life felt carefree and easy. She remembers walking to the 7-Eleven with her best friends, talking on the phone all night and feeling like every day was Friday. However, as she's grown older, life has become more complex, and she's struggling to adjust. Kacey wishes that she could hit the pause button on life, skip this round, take off her headset, put on some lip gloss and hang out at the mall. She expresses that being an adult is hard, and she misses the moments when everything felt less serious.
The song continues with Kacey dreaming of escaping to an island and disconnecting from the chaos of everyday life. She wants to stay up all night and forget about the responsibilities that come with adulthood. The lyrics convey that life is messy, and Kacey finds herself overwhelmed with the weight of responsibility. She misses the simplicity of youth and longs for the freedom that comes with it.
Overall, "Simple Times" is a reflection on the beauty of youth and the difficulties that come with growing up. The song encourages us to appreciate the little moments that we often take for granted and reminds us that sometimes stepping away from the chaos is necessary for our mental health.
