Mercury
Kaddisfly Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes we talk, we talk oh so much
Sometimes we talk, we talk so damn much
That we forget why we ever started talking
In the first, the first place

In a land of pirates, I'd be more concerned
With what comes from your mouth and what you believe
So flood your deck with quips fit for royal tea
I bet your ship sinks with the wave of so many

Energy, by nature, perspectives
Divergent views on the surface underneath connected
And what a state we're in when we can't forgive anyone
For the same mistakes we've made ourselves a million

Times before we've become
To place the blame on others'

In a land of pirates, I'd be more concerned
With what comes from your mouth and what you believe
So flood your deck with quips fit for royal tea
I bet your ship sinks with the wave of so many

We have begun to replace wisdom with vanity
And hold others accountable for the coalition of our own feat

In a land of pirates, I'd be more concerned
With what comes from your mouth and what you believe
So flood your deck with quips fit for royal tea
I bet your ship wrecked with the weight of so many

There's a battle in a backyard alley
Brothers fight over almost nothing
These siblings will be sad to find that war is the winner

We keep fighting for position in a human race that never began
Where the start and the end are both made up with same thing

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Kaddisfly's song "Mercury" explore the complexities of communication and the consequences of our words and beliefs. The opening lines suggest that sometimes we talk excessively, to the point where we forget the initial purpose behind our conversations. The repetition emphasizes the overwhelming nature of our constant chatter.

The reference to a land of pirates serves as a metaphor to highlight the importance of being mindful of what we say and believe. In this context, the mouth represents the weapon and words have the power to either build or destroy. The mention of flooding the deck with quips fit for royal tea alludes to the superficiality and shallowness of our conversations. The image of the ship sinking with the weight of so many speaks to the destructive impact of too much empty talk.

The singer reflects on the state we find ourselves in, where forgiveness becomes rare and instead, we tend to place blame on others. This observation suggests a lack of self-awareness and the tendency to repeat the same mistakes. The lyrics also criticize the replacement of wisdom with vanity and the habit of holding others accountable for our own shortcomings.

The final lines depict a battle in a backyard alley, symbolizing trivial conflicts among individuals. The sad realization is that war becomes the winner, highlighting the futility of fighting for position in a human race that never truly began. The start and end being made up of the same thing suggests the cyclical nature of human existence.

Overall, "Mercury" serves as a critique of excessive communication, superficiality, and misplaced accountability, prompting us to reflect on the significance of our words and actions.

Damn, this sounds so perfect. Kaddisfly is the best live band I've ever heard. I saw them in Connecticut at Take Action, and they get no props for their amazing talent. It sounds just like the album...even the vocalist.

David Brown

Yeah, i love it. The EP is great. These guys say that they are on hiatus though, so there's still hope for "Horses Galloping On Sailboats" surely...
