Every Thing Is Average Nowadays
Kaiser Chiefs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sooooooooooooooooooooooo
Everything is average nowadays
Everything is average nowadays
Everyone would do it if they can
And everything is going down the pan
And everyone is following the craze
And everything is average
Now you say it's getting better
But I don't really see the signs
Said it is too different
You thought it would be suicide

Not much to believe in
Left up on a shelf
So get your coats we're leaving
We'll just do something else

Ohhhh everything is average nowadays
Everything is average nowadays
And everything is of no consequence
'Cos everyone is sitting on the fence
And everything will always stay the same
'Cos everything is average

Now you said you didn't mean it
You threw away the book of rules
You thought that we should read it
I wouldn't even know how to

Not much to believe in
Left up on the shelf
So get your coats we're leaving
We'll just do something else

All I need is a ball and a wall
Or a sledge and a hill in heavy weather
All I need is a ball and a wall
A sledge and a hill in heavy weather

Oh oh oh oh etc.

Not much to believe in
Left up on the shelf
So get your coats we're leaving
We'll just do something else

Sooooooooooooooooooooooo
Everything is average nowadays
Everything is average nowadays
Everyone would do it if they can
And everything is going down the pan

And everyone is following the craze
And everything is average nowadays

Overall Meaning

Kaiser Chiefs's song "Everything Is Average Nowadays" speaks of dissatisfaction and disengagement with the current state of things in the world. The repetitive use of the phrase "Everything is average nowadays" emphasizes the idea that people have settled for mediocrity and conformity. The line "And everything is going down the pan" denotes a feeling of decline and decay, a sense that things are getting worse instead of better. The critique of the prevalent mindset is further shown in the line "And everything will always stay the same," highlighting the stagnation and lack of progress.

The song also touches on the idea of rebellion against the norm. The chorus encourages the listener to break free from the herd mentality, to leave behind those who are content with average and strive for something more fulfilling. The line "You thought that we should read it, I wouldn't even know how to" depicts the lack of desire or ability to conform to societal expectations.

The overall message of the song is that complacency and acceptance of the ordinary will lead to a monotonous and mundane life. It implores the listener to challenge themselves, to strive for something greater and not simply accept the status quo.

14 years ago, in the spring, when I was a teenager, my mother died. our whole family was heartbroken. A week after the funeral, my dad gave me 500 rubles (15 dollars) and said: "It's still difficult for me to talk about this, but I want to support you. Go to a music store and buy yourself some music album." I went and for some reason bought the Kaizer Chiefs album, although I heard only one Ruby song from them. In general, I was not a fan of them. I came home, started listening to the disc and on this song (Everything is Averge) I got overwhelmed. I looked at one point in the room and listened to this song on repeat. I went to the institute on the subway and listened to this song. She turned off my sorrowful thoughts. It was as if I was meditating. It was like this for several months until I got better. This song helped me get over my grief. And now, I listen to it and I have such strange sensations, as if it was not with me and not in this life. Take care of yourself and your loved ones.

Ty so much for your story.

Still a great underrated song, remember listening to them at Uni when they were huge at the time. Their popularity has wained over time but their music still holds up against any modern day band.
