Man On Mars
Kaiser Chiefs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Put a man on Mars today
It wasn't the first time
I've seen it all before
Took my hat off in the rain today
It wasn't the first time
I've seen it all before

Trust you
Trust you
Trust you to know everything about me
Trust you
Trust you
Trust you to know everything about me all along

And the coffee is medicine
It's hard to remember
I've seen it all before
And the picture at the factory floor
Rats in a suitcase
I've seen it all before

Trust you
Trust you
Trust you to know everything about me
Trust you
Trust you
Trust you to know everything about me all along

Put a man on Mars today
It wasn't the future
I've seen it all before

Trust you trust you trust you to know everything about me
Trust you trust you trust you to know everything about me all along

All along

All along
All along

Overall Meaning

The Kaiser Chiefs's song Man On Mars delves into the concept of repetition and redundancy in our lives. The opening line talks about the monumental achievement of putting someone on Mars, but then goes on to say that it's not really a first time experience. The feelings of deja vu permeate throughout the song, as the singer refers to seeing things all before. Even the rain and coffee which are supposed to be different in every situation get monotonous as the lyrics say, "took my hat off in the rain today, it wasn't the first time". It's almost as if the singer is stuck in a loop, and everything is turning into a blur, without anything new or exciting happening.

Amidst these thoughts, there is an implication of trust involved, perhaps in relationships or with someone whom the singer is confiding in. The repetition of the phrase "trust you" over and over again, further emphasizes the need for trust, and the relationship between the two parties involved. The lyrics, "Trust you to know everything about me" could mean that they are so comfortable with each other that this loop of life does not really matter, and as long as there is someone to share it all with, it's all good. The song ends on a contemplative note of "All along", implying that the singer maybe knew that this is how it would all turn out in the end.
