Because Camy is not only a singer, though music has always been a priority in her artistic career - she grew up in a family circle adoring jazz and grand opera. She was a good artist - coveting a dream of becoming an architect. She even began her studies in the profession, but disappointments became a hurdle… only to redirect her to acting. For three and a half years she practices acting in Theatre "4 x 4" where performing on stage along with dancing and singing revealed her artistic identity.
The breakthrough happened when her professors at the Music Academy overwhelmed by the speed with which she covered the stretch from a pupil to a ripe professional, her fluent "musicality", wide sound range and pitch diversity, discovered the needed soloist to represent them at the Second Jazz Festival at the Universiada Hall. Camy confides that this was the crucial moment in her life. An invitation to Lublen (Poland) for a festival dedicated to Duke Ellington is soon to follow, where Flowers are lovable takes Special Prize for Ellington Performance and Second Prize as a singer. She participates in the Bombay Festival performing with the band of saxophone player Stan Getz, followed by four individual concerts.
Camy recreates her own feelings in everything she touches. Her gifted self-expression is noticed in the movie circles too - and after her appearances in The Goat Horn, The Black Angels, The Boy Is Leaving, Monologue on a Piglet among others, she gets the lead in The Tirnovo Queen - film version of an Emilian Stanev classic novel, where she is a worthy partner of Stefan Danailov - the biggest male movie star of the time. During the shooting she manages to win - on the strength of her beautiful voice taking you to worlds unknown, untouched by the gray everyday tediousness, where dreams suffice to be whispered to turn into reality - The Golden Orpheus Award at The National Festival of Song.
And the big hits start rolling, becoming classic in the domain of Bulgarian pop - Whispered Dreams, Discovery, Words Drift Away, Mood, Violets, Boy Don't Look At Me Like That, A World In Love, Day And Night and many others.
With her strong and full-toned voice Camy collects an award in Dresden (Germany), has guest appearances in Friedrichstatpalace, Malta, the Klagenfuhrt Festival (Austria) and makes her debut appearance in Vienna and Rome.
All the time looking for wider horizons and stronger challenges and wishing to try out the parameters of her voice she leaves the country and embarks on a career in Germany and Great Britain building up a repertoire of soul, funk and rock. Camelia Todorova has songs released by Virgin Records in England - she records her first single with Roger Tyler of Queen under the title (My Heart is) Bursting at the Seams, followed by A Chain of Fools. Her work establishes her as a professional working with show biz personalities such as George Michael, Boy George, Hot Chocolate etc.
But her real vocation remains jazz - the music she could interpret best and which shows her true vocal range. Her interpretations are marked by vocal technique precision and emotional abundance. The stage presence of Camy, the magnetic power of her blue eyes expressing fully her emotionality and openness create a true bond with the world of her audience. She insists on preserving her charisma as an important element which helps the audience feel as deeply and as sincerely what the performer feels.
Camelia Todorova participated in The Fifth Bansko Jazz Festival marking the start of her 25th anniversary on stage. Another of the features of her creative jubilee is the release of her new album Pleasure. The promotion concert was on January 24, 2003 at the Grand Hall of The National Palace of Culture.
