PARADOX
Kansas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm on fire
Burning with the question in my mind
Strange desire
Seems there's nothing else for me to find
'Cause I've been here, and I've been there
Seems like I've been everywhere before
I've seen it all a hundred times
Still I think there surely must be more

I've been livin'
I had to take my time and change my style
Now I wonder
Is something gonna make it all worthwhile?
I know there's more than meets the eye
I'd like to see it before I die for sure
Something tells me it's all right
Only one step farther to the door

There ain't no feelin'
That feels the same as findin' out the key
Now I'm reelin'
Thinking of the things that I might see, oh

I'm not afraid to face the light
I'm not afraid to think that I might fall

I was going nowhere fast
I was needing something that would last

Overall Meaning

The song Paradox by Kansas is about the search for meaning and purpose in life. The singer is experiencing a strange desire and burning questions in his mind, and despite having been everywhere and seen everything, he feels like there must be something more to discover. Though he has taken his time to live and change his style, he wonders if something will make it all worthwhile.

The lyrics convey a sense of restlessness and dissatisfaction with the status quo. The singer is not afraid to face the light or to take risks in pursuit of his goals. He recognizes that there is no feeling quite like finding the key to life's mysteries and is willing to take that one step farther to the door. The song encourages listeners to embrace the unknown and enjoy the journey, even if it means taking a detour from the beaten path.

One of the features of most prog rock was the incredible level of difficulty in terms of time signatures, syncopation, chord progressions all composed into and around interesting themes lyrically. This song - along with MANY other Kansas songs - is emblematic of this and is why they are one of my all time favorite prog bands.

Steve W So true Steve. And the vocals were no piece of cake either.

Galactic Gals

The whole thing is just beautiful, ever note every chord progression.

Del Shoemaker

They put music back into rock and roll!

Doug P

There it is. Articulated in a way I never could have. Thank you!

Desert To sea Homes

This has to be one of the best ROCK tunes ever. Why don't we all know it. Kansas, ELP were Real progressive rock and roll and inspired all of us at home musicians of that time. To practice practice practice . Thank you guys for your creativity, incite and most of all your outstanding musicianship. Musicians of that time will always bow down to you. You were so creative and so out of the box. You made us think. Not be commercial or a Paradox of the time. God bless Kansas. They did more and inspired more then they had too.

I'll never forget hearing this song for the very first time. Their 2nd or 3rd show of the Point Of Know Return tour in 1977. Few knew this song, yet. I was on the 10th row, front. I still remember looking around the crowd and seeing the faces of those who, like me, were clearly in AWE of what we were all hearing. I want to go back.

Dave Hope is a sorely under-rated bassist. Clean, rhythmic, thumping, musical precision!

Dary Kinnaman

I think he is great, sometimes he reminds me a little of Chris Squire.

Sweet Foot Pedals

never figured that out until the cover band I play in started to learn Portrait.....Bass player stopped us and told us he needed more time to work out the Dave Hope licks......"Man I never knew how good he was".....from a fairly accomplished bassist...
