The Wall
Kansas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm woven in a fantasy, I can't believe the things I see
The path that I have chosen now has led me to a wall
And with each passing day I feel a little more like something dear was lost
It rises now before me, a dark and silent barrier between
All I am and all that I would ever want to be
It's just a travesty, towering, marking off the boundaries
My spirit would erase
To pass beyond is what I seek, I fear that I may be too weak
And those are few who've seen it through to glimplse the other side
The promised land is waiting like a maiden that is soon to be a bride
The moment is a masterpiece, the weight of indecision's in the air
It's standing there, the symbol and the sum of all that's me
It's just a travesty, towering, blocking out the light and blinding me
I want to see

Gold and diamonds cast a spell, it's not for me to know it well
The treasures that I seek are waiting on the other side
There's more that I can measure in the treasure of the love that I can find
And though it's always been with me
I must tear down the wall let it be
All I am, and all that I was ever meant to be, in harmony

Shining true and smiling back at all who wait to cross
There is no loss

Overall Meaning

"The Wall" by Kansas is a song about the barriers that we erect around ourselves due to our fears and insecurities. The singer talks about being "woven in a fantasy," where he can't believe the things he sees, and how this has led him down a path that has now led to a wall. He feels like something dear was lost and that there is a dark and silent barrier between him and who he wants to be.

The singer seeks to pass beyond the wall, but fears that he may be too weak. He realizes that few have seen it through to glimpse the other side and that the promised land is waiting like a maiden that is soon to be a bride. The wall is a symbol and the sum of all that's him. He wants to tear down the wall to find harmony and be true to himself.

The song is a reflection of the human experience, where we often create walls that hold us back from living our best lives. These walls can be mental, emotional, or physical. However, understanding the weight of indecision and overcoming our fears can give us the courage to tear down the wall and find our true selves.

The Wall is so incredibly haunting and beautiful. It demonstrates the monster sized writing talent within this band. I can listen to this song on an endless loop and never get sick of it. It's THAT emotional for me.

+John D one of the best songs kansas ever made, that you don't hear on the radio anymore,i was 13 years old when the album came out,not a weak track on it.

John D Agreed, musically I still love that 1992 live at the whiskey version, Steve was a little too jacked up LOL but he definitely put his heart into it on that version, but again musically it was brilliant all the musicians Richards guitar sounded menacing

VCorvelli

Sadly no one is writing music like this anymore. Very few bands today know the meaning of what a "concept album" is. Few can write lyrics with any deep and simultaneously clear meaning as Kansas always did. These gentlemen are true musicians with one foot in the the world of classical and the other in the world of '70s rock 'n roll. I have seen them three times in concert since 1979. I miss Steinhardt, Livgren & Hope, but they still sound damn good!

I saw them 3 times also. I still have my first concert ticket and it says $9.50

Beautiful song..one of the best of the 20th century. The lyrics are genius and thought provoking.

Walsh's voice still sounded great after all of those years!
