On The Other Side
Kansas (2) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The empty page before me now, the pen is in my hand
The words don't come so easy but I'm trying
I'm searching for a melody or some forgotten line
They can slip away from us so quickly

Don't be unkind I'm not complaining
I only feel it needs explaining
Though I've said it all before I'll say it once again (one more time)
Everyone needs something to believe in
So turn around, turn around it's on the other side
Feel the sound, feel the sound, it's coming from deep inside
It will fill you with emotion, if you let it be your guide so
Turn around; turn around, it's on the other side

I'm waiting for the day to end another to begin
Somehow I've forgotten what it stood for
I look into your face and see the searching in your eyes
I will he your servant till the end

The music plays, and for a moment I feel
That all there days an so fulfilling

Though I've said it all before I'll say it once again (one more time)
Everyone needs something to believe in
So turn around, turn around it's on the other side
Feel the sound, feel the sound, it's coming from deep inside
It will fill you with emotion, if you let it be your guide so
Turn around; turn around, it's on the other side

Desperation shows its ugly face in many ways
No one can escape the times we live in
The answers are so simple and we all know where to look
But it's easier to just avoid the question

And if I seem too inconclusive
It's just because it's so elusive

Though I've said it all before I'll say it once again (one more time)
Everyone needs something to believe in
So turn around, turn around it's on the other side
Feel the sound, feel the sound, it's coming from deep inside

It will fill you with emotion, if you let it be your guide so
Turn around; turn around, it's on the other side

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "On the Other Side" by Kansas (2) depict a songwriter with an empty page before them, struggling to find words that fit together with a melody. It's a common problem among artists who are searching for inspiration, and this song is about the struggle to find meaning and purpose in life. The songwriter speaks to the listener, imploring them to turn around and look at the other side of things. They want the listener to "feel the sound" from "deep inside." The song's themes are hope, searching, and the power of music to speak to our emotions and guide us through life.

Throughout the song, the lyrics are repeated, as if to drive home the message that everyone needs something to believe in. The repetition of the chorus is also an instrumental aspect of the song that adds to its emotional appeal. The writer tries to convince us that if we're feeling lost, we should turn around and try to find the answers on the other side. Ultimately, this song is about hope and the power of music to guide us through tough times.

The first time I saw Kanas I was 15 the year was 1975. I paid $3.00 and sat in the second row center! They were doing the Masque tour. I was with my buddies we where in a band . Our jaws hit the floor. I’m proud to say they are the all time best for me. If I had to use 1 word to describe them. That word would be POWERFUL!!!! If you never saw them live then see them they will rock your world. I have seen them 13 times. 7 times with the original lineup. I’m 63 now and will see them every time they come to town or anywhere close. They are 2nd to none! The GOAT of Rock & Roll!!! All I can say is Thanks for the Memories!!!

I'm 71 and have always loved Kansas. About 9 years ago they came to my small city in western Mass. and the day before I bought a ticket. I hope I never forget that evening. I walked to the venue as well. More than I ever expected, and it was on my "Bucket List"

@joeblow26

Unfortunately they are just the shadow of the band now I believe only one member from the earlier Kansas is left

@michaelbaucom4019

RIP Robby Steinhardt. You'll live on though, through Kansas's music. 😢 🎻

@richardwalker9826

Kansas second most underrated song next to Hymn to the Atman-
their 2 best songs in my opinion-
they both say it all

@vaughn6820

People call Kansas a prog rock band, they set a bar much higher in my opinion that I would call orchestral rock, they don't play just songs, they're more like compositions...Insanely wonderful compositions only with very profound lyrics as the cherry on top...

@adamserafini6945

Well put. Magnum opus is work of art among others this band created.

@juanolmo2748

Steve Walsh is probably one of the most UNDERRATED singer EVER, and he is AMAZING.

@juanolmo2748

Probably?, Steve is a fucking underrated, he was one of the greates singer in rock history, Kansas have to be included in the Hall of Fame, is a fucking shame.

@michaelthomas8333

ABSOLUTELY!!
