Back to Basics
Kanye West Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Uh, uh

Let's take it back to basics
When shit gets worse, we converse
How we need a new balance
Before the lines get crossed like Asics
Just look at what we got, if we don't shoot the Reeboks
This is a beat that no flow can detox
So the respect is due like my Louie back
I don't wanna have to check you
I'm Chi as buck-fifty's and Pelle Pelle leathers
Some say my beats made the Bulls play better
I say, black on black is the hate that hate made
Sara Lee with the dough, I'm talkin' 'bout the cake maid
McDonald's with the flow, served over over a billion
You've seen the video, words over the building
Uh, I wish I could give you this feeling
I wish I could give you this feeling
And when the Workout Plan ain't work out, man
Me and Common is back on the corners again
On the corner

Uh, yeah, uh, yeah, uh-uh, uh-uh
I open my eyes, the corner is like African tribes
The black is subsidized, the black enterprise, the passion arise
The youth fantasize, who got some cash in they eyes
If youth dies, mamas askin' rationalize
Tryna build a spot where ghetto bastards could rise
The ghetto has been bastardized by those that capitalize
Wonder if it's a plan that the master devised

To bring his people to a land where the blacks are despised?
On the corner

Overall Meaning

In Kanye West's song Back to Basics featuring Adam Levine of Maroon 5, the two artists urge listeners to return to a simpler time in order to solve societal problems. The phrase "back to basics" implies a need to strip away the excess and eliminate complications in order to better understand the root of issues. When things get worse, they suggest communicating with one another to find a new balance before lines are crossed. The reference to shoe brands Asics and Reebok suggests that if lines do get crossed, things can get messy very quickly.

Kanye takes the opportunity to talk about the respect he's earned, specifically the respect he feels is given to him because of his status as a wealthy musician who can afford personal luxury items like Louis Vuitton. In contrast, he mentions his everyday Chicago wardrobe: a Pelle Pelle leather jacket that costs $150, or "a buck-fifty," which he calls being "Chi." Someone who is "Chi" embodies the essence of Chicago, and thus is "real" in Kanye's eyes. Kanye's musical skills have even been credited with making the Chicago Bulls play better, which speaks to his influence on the city's culture. Adam Levine takes over the chorus, wishing to give his partner or listener the kind of feeling that the simplicity of life used to bring. In the end, the song seems to suggest that a return to basics, or a simpler way of living, is the key to unlocking societal problems.

For those who aren’t aware, this was a bonus track only presented during his Australian-Japanese tour back in 2006. Basically before Youtube, in order to listen to it you either had to be at one of the shows on the tour or buy an exclusive australian-japanese copy of the album. Thankfully we got youtube though

@moonflower6607

What if it leaked?

@balenciiii

@@moonflower6607 wdym leaked? it was released, there were probably websites to listen to it on but only officially on australian and japanese copies

@sdfgfdgfdkgjfdkgfjd

correction: youtube existed in 2006 (but it was an small platform, so no one uploaded it at that time)

@ibma14

First time hearing was on an unofficial Kanye mixtape. It was titled “the corner”

@TroaBroa
