Kanye West Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I been waiting for a minute
For my lady
So I can't jeopardize that for one of these hoes
I been living without limits
As far as my business
I'm the only one that's in control
I been feeling all I've given
For my children
I will die for those I love
God, I'm willing
To make this my mission
Give up the women
Before I lose half of what I own
I been thinking
About my vision
Pour out my feelings
Revealing the layers to my soul
My soul
The layers to my soul
Revealing the layers to my soul

Wish I would go ahead and fuck my life up
Can't let them get to me
And even though I always fuck my life up
Only I can mention me

See, before I let you go
One last thing I need to let you know
You ain't never seen nothing crazier than
This nigga when he off his Lexapro
Remember that last time in Mexico
Remember that last time, the episode
Asking me why the hell I text in code
Four times just to say don't text me hoe
Told you four times, don't test me hoe
Now we finna lose all self-control
But you ain't finna be raising your voice at me
Especially when we in the Giuseppe store
But I'mma have the last laugh in the end
Cause I'm from a tribe called check a hoe
Yeah, I'mma have to laugh Indian
Cause I'm from a tribe called check a hoe
And I

Wish I would go ahead and fuck my life up
Can't let them get to me
And even though I always fuck my life up
Only I can mention me
Wish I would go ahead and fuck my life up
Can't let them get to me
And even though I always fuck my life up
Only I can mention me

See through the veil
And forget all of your cares
Throw them
Throw them away
Don't stop your loving
Don't stop for nothing
No, not for nothing
They don't wanna see me love you
Nah, don't stop it
They always love it
They always wanna
They don't wanna see me love you
They don't wanna see me love you
They don't wanna see me love you

Oh, life's a feeling, yeah
Oh, the body's a feeling

Overall Meaning

The opening of "FML" reflects an internal conflict within Kanye West. On one hand, he loves and values his partner and children deeply; on the other, he feels tempted by the other women in his life, and expresses a willingness to give them up. He feels that he's the only one who can control his own life and business, and that he needs to pour out his deepest feelings and reveal the layers of his soul while still preserving his own autonomy. His desire for self-determination also arises in the second verse, where he reflects on his past mistakes and the effects of his medication, and insists that only he can criticize himself. His lyrics raise the question of what it really means to be in control of one's own life, and whether it ever has to come at the cost of meaningful relationships.

The chorus of "FML" reflects a feeling of being under attack, vulnerable to the opinions and scrutiny of others. West sings that he wishes he could "go ahead and fuck my life up," but he can't allow others to get to him. Although he feels like he's always the one messing things up for himself, he emphasizes that he's the only one who can criticize himself - not anyone else. The song concludes with a plea to forget one's worries and to continue loving without letting anything stop you. Ultimately, "FML" captures the internal struggles and anxieties of a successful artist who finds himself caught between the desire for love and the desire for control.

Line by Line Meaning

I been waiting for a minute For my lady So I can't jeopardize that for one of these hoes
My priorities are straight, and I value my lady above the other women I come across. I don't want to lose what I have with her for some random woman.

I been living without limits As far as my business I'm the only one that's in control
When it comes to my business ventures, I'm in the driver's seat. I make all the decisions, and there are no constraints on what I can do.

I been feeling all I've given For my children I will die for those I love God, I'm willing To make this my mission Give up the women Before I lose half of what I own
My children mean everything to me, and I would do whatever it takes to provide and protect them. That includes prioritizing them over any women in my life who may be causing problems or distractions.

I been thinking About my vision Pour out my feelings Revealing the layers to my soul My soul The layers to my soul Revealing the layers to my soul

See, before I let you go One last thing I need to let you know You ain't never seen nothing crazier than This nigga when he off his Lexapro Remember that last time in Mexico Remember that last time, the episode Asking me why the hell I text in code Four times just to say don't text me hoe Told you four times, don't test me hoe
Before we end things between us, let me make something clear - I have some mental health issues that, when exacerbated by going off my medication, make me behave erratically. You've seen it before, like in Mexico, when I got upset and paranoid about your texts.

Now we finna lose all self-control But you ain't finna be raising your voice at me Especially when we in the Giuseppe store But I'mma have the last laugh in the end Cause I'm from a tribe called check a hoe Yeah, I'mma have to laugh Indian Cause I'm from a tribe called check a hoe And I
I know we're about to get into a heated argument, but you can't start yelling at me in public, especially in a fancy store like Giuseppe's. In the end, I'll get the upper hand and win, because I come from a group of people who are good at handling difficult situations with women. Yeah, and I'll even resort to dirty tactics if I have to, because it's part of who I am.

See through the veil And forget all of your cares Throw them Throw them away Don't stop your loving Don't stop for nothing No, not for nothing
Look past the distractions and worries that weigh you down, and focus on what truly matters - love. Don't let anything or anyone stop you from giving and receiving that love.

They don't wanna see me love you Nah, don't stop it They always love it They always wanna They don't wanna see me love you They don't wanna see me love you Oh, life's a feeling, yeah Oh, the body's a feeling
There are people who don't want to see us together, but we can't let their negativity affect us. Love is a powerful feeling that we should embrace and cherish in every aspect of our lives.

One of the most left-field, experimental outros I've ever heard in hip-hop, underrated gem

@ezrahaskard3527

I love this song but the weird unharmonious thing at the end throws me off so much. I thought this was one of Kanye’s greatest non-rap songs until I heard that, but I’m still a big fan of the song and if you like it then all the power to you cause that was the only thing personally holding this song back from being one of my favs

@thomasnelson5758

@@ezrahaskard3527 The dissonance in the sample is what sold the song for me, it's distorted and warped beyond sounding human, and in a way it reflects the warped ideas of love inside Kanye's head.

One of kanye's underrated masterpieces. Thank you for the lyrics

@Terror187D

Its like a weird realization that If you already fucked your life up at least you dont have to worry about decisions and there may be a level of comfort in that worth ruining your life for. Very depressing thought that i thought i was alone in having till i heard the song. Bravo my man kanye

@neel.KAITH2005

you're right. its like that realization when you hit rock bottom, that the only place you can go is up now

"Do not cross a man with nothing to lose"
So true. When you reach that point, you stop caring, and there's power in that sometimes.
