Kids
Karen Souza Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You were a child
Crawling on your knees toward it

Making mama so proud
But your voice is too loud

We like to watch you, laughing
You pick the insects of plant
No time to think of consequences
Control yourself
Take only what you need from it

A family of trees, wanting, to be haunted

The water is warm
But it's sending me, shivers
A baby is born
Crying out for attention
The memories fade
Like looking through, fogged mirror
Decisions too
Decisions are made and not bought
But I thought this wouldn't hurt a lot
I guess not

Control yourself
Take only what you, need from it

A family of trees, wanting to be haunted

Control yourself
Take only what you need from it

A family of trees wanting, to be, haunted

Overall Meaning

The song "Kids" by Karen Souza starts with describing the innocence of childhood. The lines "You were a child, crawling on your knees toward it, making mama so proud" represent how as a child, one starts at the bottom and slowly tries to reach for the top. The phrase "But your voice is too loud" portrays that as one grows up, one becomes more and more vocal about their opinions and beliefs.

The next few lines, "We like to watch you, laughing, you pick the insects off plants, no time to think of consequences" could signify how society tends to look upon individuals as mere entertainment, regardless of their well-being. It also signifies how as humans, we tend to do things that may cause harm without thinking about the consequences of our actions.

The chorus "Control yourself, take only what you need from it, a family of trees wanting to be haunted" could be interpreted as a metaphor of how one should only take the essential things they need from life and not go beyond it. It could also signify how we should not take more than what is available or given to us, as that could lead to undesirable consequences.

The lines "The water is warm, but it's sending me shivers" could represent a metaphor of something that is seemingly comfortable and familiar but might still lead to fear or hesitation. The line "A baby is born crying out for attention" portrays how attention-seeking behavior is inherent in all of us, and we seek it in different ways. The last few lines "Decisions too, decisions are made and not bought, but I thought this wouldn't hurt a lot, I guess not" could signify how even though we make our own decisions, the consequences may still hurt us.

You were a child,
crawlin’ on your knees toward it
makin’ mama so proud,
but your voice is too loud.

We like to watch you laughing,
pickin’ insects off plants,
no time to think of consequences.

Control yourself.
Take only what you need from it.
A family of trees wanting
to be haunted.

The water is warm,
but its sending me shivers.
A baby is born,
crying out for attention.
The memories fade
like looking through a fogged mirror
Decisions to decisions are made and not fought
but I thought
this wouldn’t hurt a lot.
I guess not.

Control yourself.
Take only what you need from it.
A family of trees wantin'
to be haunted.

Control yourself.
Take only what you need from it.
