She can be found singing under these pseudonymns on albums such as Pacha Ibiza, FTV (FashionTV), Paris Dernier, Hotel Costes and Privé. She had just begun to flirt with the idea of singing to jazz when she was contacted and invited to join the production of the first volume of the series, Jazz and ´80s. No one imagined the success that the series would have almost over night. The producer of the series knew a good thing when he saw it and he quickly shared his enthusiasm in the project with Karen and made her and her voice an important part of each album.
Now that Karen had gotten her toes wet in the studio, her label decided it was time to dive in and they sent her and the rest of the Quartet on tour to Brazil in late 2009. The visit was a great success and Karen came into her own onstage, gaining confidence and ever tuning and refining her singing.
On the heels of the Brazilian adventure, the label again stepped in and told Karen it was time to focus on her own material.
To this effect they sent her to Los Angeles for a few months to work with and learn from some of the best songwriters in the business. It was there that she studied under the guidance of Pam Oland , a multiple Grammy nominated songwriter who has worked with stars like Whitney Houston, Earth, Wind and Fire and Aretha Franklin, to name a few. This period gave new direction to Karens own composing and songwriting and has helped her develop her signature sound while continuing to please fans with her characteristic lush vocals.
After her stint in LA, Karen began to dedicate herself exclusively to rehearsing both new and older material with the rest of the quartet and they have achieved a symbiosis that is a pleasure to watch. The Cooltrane Quartet with Karen in the lead is an act not to be missed, full of excellent jazz versions and brand new soloist material from a truly dynamic young artist.
Night Demon
Karen Souza Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm like a flashlight
and so I pretend I'm alive
But demons get tired
and almost away from the dust
It's only that to be
All of dreams are deeper and deeper
One male can make so keeper so it's wonder well I deliver
Be the night demon be the night demon they are
Be the night demon be the night demon they are
All of dreams are deeper and deeper
One male can make so keeper so it's wonder well I deliver
Be the night demon be the night demon they are
Be the night demon be the night demon they are
The lyrics to Karen Souza's "Night Demon" appear to be focused on the idea of hiding one's true nature or emotions, particularly with regards to darkness and potentially negative feelings. The repeated refrain "be the night demon" could be interpreted as a call to embrace one's darker or more suppressed feelings, or to put on a façade that suggests you are strong and impenetrable like a demon of the night. The line "no one ever tries to look in your eyes" could imply feelings of isolation or disconnection from others, perhaps due to a fear of being vulnerable or exposed.
The verses continue this theme, with lines like "I'm like a flashlight / and so I pretend I'm alive." This suggests that the singer is putting effort into appearing happy or energetic, but it may be a facade that they are struggling to maintain. The line "But demons get tired / and almost away from the dust" could be interpreted as a acknowledgement that even the most seemingly impenetrable people have their limits, and are susceptible to wear and tear over time. Finally, the last line, "writing on your dreams in the dark," could imply that the singer is exploring their subconscious or trying to express hidden feelings through creative means, but is still keeping these thoughts hidden from others.
Overall, "Night Demon" seems to be a song about the struggle to reconcile one's inner and outer selves, and the discomfort that can come with feeling like you need to put up a guard or wear a mask to protect yourself. The repeated refrain of "be the night demon" could be seen as a way of affirming one's own strength and resilience in the face of these challenges.
