Lift Me Up
Karen Zoid Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Clothes, clothes are all dirty
And we know that
We'll have to find a way
To the closest laundromat
Well I knew I was in a hotel room
When I saw the painting on the wall

Like a scene out of a Mills and Boon
Like a rip-off of a Tretchikoff
Tow lonely boats next to the sea
A seagull flying, a house and a tree

And I looked at you
And you looked to me
And I though to myself
I'll get stuck in a small room with you
Any day, any day
I'll get stuck in a small room with you
Any day, any day
How I know you
How I'd Show You

Shows, shows are so many In every different place
Place your faith in another
I'll be there to help keep face
Well, I wish I would say what I really mean
But the words arrange me in between
If you could read my mind
If you could read my soul
I'd never have to let you know
I'd never have to let you know
I'll be your friend forever, boy
Even when we act so clever, boy
I'll be your friend forever, boy
Even when we act so clever, boy
How I know you
How I'd Show You

I'll get stuck in a small room with you
Any day, any day
I'll get stuck in a small room with you

Any day, any day
Any day now

Overall Meaning

In "Lift Me Up," Karen Zoid sings about being stuck in a hotel room with someone that she cares about. Despite having dirty clothes and no way to clean them other than going to the laundromat, Zoid is content to be in this room with her companion. She describes a painting on the wall that is reminiscent of a Mills and Boon romance novel, or a cheap copy of a Vladimir Tretchikoff painting, depicting two lonely boats next to the sea, a seagull flying, a house, and a tree. Zoid seems to find the painting and the setting romantic and feels connected to her companion, wishing that they could spend more time together in a small room. The second verse talks about how difficult it can be to express oneself honestly in the midst of countless shows in different places. Zoid laments that she wishes she could convey her true feelings, but feels trapped between the words that she can and cannot say.

The chorus repeats that Zoid would love to be in a small room with her companion any day, and that she would be loyal to them even when they are trying to be clever or put up a facade. The song emphasizes the importance of connection, even if it is small and simple. The end of the song suggests that they will be together soon, though it is unclear where or when.
