Jenkins was born in Penclawdd, Gower, Wales. After attending the University of Wales, Cardiff, he began postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
It was in jazz that he initially made his mark. In the days of Jazz Polls he was a prolific poll winner, playing at Ronnie Scott’s club before co-forming Nucleus, which won first prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival. This was followed by a period with Soft Machine. Defying categorisation, the Softs played venues as diverse as the Proms, Carnegie Hall, and the Newport Jazz Festival.
It is perhaps for his Adiemus project and classical works for which he is best known. Adiemus has topped classical and pop charts around the world.
2002 saw the premiere of his double harp concerto Over the Stone, commissioned by HRH The Prince of Wales for the then Royal Harpist, Catrin Finch and Elinor Bennett accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
Other projects include scoring and conducting an album of rock classics by Bonnie Tyler. In the field of advertising music Jenkins has won several industry awards. Credits include Levi’s, British Airways, Renault, Volvo, De Beers, C&G, Tag Heuer, Pepsi, and many more.
His concertante, ‘Quirk’, commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Colin Davis, was premiered in February 2005, as part of its centenary season. In 2005 Jenkins composed the score for the feature film River Queen, directed by New Zealander Vincent Ward. March 2005 saw the release of his Requiem.
Jenkins' most recent work includes a work inspired by Kazakh culture and music, Tlep, which features the Finnish Adiemus singers. Also released in 2006 was Kiri Sings Karl, which includes original compositions and arrangements of other pieces, and features Kiri Te Kanawa.

Better is peace than always war,
And better is peace than evermore war,
Always war, always war,
Better is peace than evermore war,
And better and better is peace.
L'homme armé doit on douter?
Better is peace than always war,
And better is peace than evermore war,
Always war, always war,
Better is peace than evermore war,
And better and better is peace.
Ring, ring, ring, ring,
Ring, ring, ring, ring!
Ring out the thousand wars of old.
Ring in the thousand years of peace.
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring happy bells across the snow.
The year is going, let him go,
The year is going, let him go.
Ring out the false, ring in the new,
Ring out old shapes of foul disease.
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.
Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand.
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.
The year is going; let him go.
The year is going; let him go.
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
Ring, ring, ring, ring,
Ring, ring, ring, ring!
God shall wipe away all tears
And there shall be no more death,
Neither sorrow nor crying,
Neither shall there be anymore pain.
Praise the Lord,
Praise the Lord,
Praise the Lord.

sang this a few years ago with a 200 hundred people choir+ 100 orchstra in a french cathedral for the anniversary of the WWI. We were all German. It is a mass for peace!

This entire piece was one hell of an emotional roller-coaster.

One of the most exhilarating experiences of my life was singing this with a choir in Barcelona in 2013. My heart pounds so fast whiile I hear it again.

The group I am singing with is performing this whole work with the orchestra next month. This is the first I have heard the whole thing all the way through. I don't know if I will be able to perform it and keep my composure. The whole thing is so very moving! I love this! Ironically, the CD for this whole piece with Karl Jenkins conducting this with the London Symphony was released on 9/10/01. The piece's beauty and artistry was heightened all the more because of that.

Cindy Schlicht I sang the whole mass in 2014 with 5 different choirs and it was just awesome ! We were around 200 (maybe 210 or 220) and it was a magical moment which was too fast, sadly.

Myself and a few of my school mates as well as some kids from other highschools in my area sung the whole Armed Man with an elderly choir for the opening of a war memorial theatre in my city. It really was amazing, having 2 completely different generations come together as 1 in harmony. I could barely stop myself from tearing up after we performed this, I didn't want it to be over. A memory that I will forever cherish.

I sang the Bass for this work years back. The whole Mass is just hauntingly beautiful.
