Someone To Lay Down Beside Me
Karla Bonoff Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's somebody waiting alone in the street
For someone to walk up and greet

Here you are all alone in the city
Where's the one that you took to your side
Lonely faces will stare through your eyes in the night
And they'll say - woman sweet woman please come home with me
You're shining and willing and free
But your love it's a common occurrence
Not like love that I feel in my heart
Still you know that may be what I need

Is someone to lay down beside me
And even though it's not real
Just someone to lay down beside me
You're the story of my life

Well morning is breaking the street lights are off
The sun will soon share all the cost
Of a world that can be sort of heartless
Not like love that you feel in our heart
Still you know that may be all you get

Is someone to lay down beside me
And even tho it's not real

Just someone to lay down beside me
You just can't ask for more

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Karla Bonoff's "Someone To Lay Down Beside Me" paint a vivid picture of loneliness and longing for human connection in a busy city full of strangers. The opening lines introduce the idea of someone waiting for company in the street, emphasizing the importance of companionship to human beings. The second verse speaks directly to the listener, highlighting their loneliness in the city and the absence of their companion who was once by their side.

The chorus then becomes a plea for someone to lay down beside the singer, even if it's not true love. The use of the word "real" suggests that the singer is aware of the possibility that the connection they seek may be fleeting or superficial. Nonetheless, they still long for someone to share physical intimacy with out of sheer need for human touch and comfort. The third verse, however, presents a more optimistic outlook, as the singer reminds themselves that the sun will rise and shine on their world again. The use of the phrase "sort of heartless" further emphasizes the difficulty of living in a city where genuine love and relationships may be hard to come by.

Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on the importance of human connection and physical touch, especially in the context of urban life where individuals can become isolated and lonely despite being surrounded by people.

mellencamp's drummer, and really the whole band, was his 'secret weapon-of-power', even mediocre songs would be legendary, thanks to that band-- and john's awesome, and wrote some Great frickin' songs, too many to mention! human wheels, knocks me out the hardest, but 'between a laugh and a tear' , comes to mind, and so many others! forget it! john coulda got away with a lot more, if he ever did do anything wrong!
respecto!!

it was like 1979, i'm like fourteen... i can't even tell ya the feelings this evokes, man! you have some idea, obviously!! dang, if i'd known how long it would take to gain some reliable control over the guitar, back then, tho, i'd've stuck to the drums, haha, that guitar lack'd discipline, and i may be slow, but i quit bein' a quitter before 1980! respecto!
wow, now i wanna hear 'ain't-even-done-with-the-night', by you-know-who!
