Walk with the Devil
Karliene Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've never claimed to be a good boy
That lad is long dead
'Cause I got stuck in the wars, Grace
Ones with bullets
And ones in my head
But you made it so
Easy to let go
Now I'm all alone
And the shots are deafening

So I walk with the the Devil
My rivals best be careful
'Cause when you're already dead
There's no gun at your head
You're finally free

I shook hands with the Devil
Ah this town best be careful
'Cause when you're already dead
There's no rope for your neck
You're finally free
Yeah, I walk with the Devil

Do you remember that broken man
When you sang your song?
And how you put him back together, girl
With your voice and with your love

'Cause you made it so
Easy to let go
Now I'm all alone
And the shots are deafening

So I walk with the the Devil
My rivals best be careful
'Cause when you're already dead
There's no gun at your head
You're finally free

I shook hands with the Devil
Ah, this town best be careful
'Cause when you're already dead
There's no rope for your neck
You're finally free

Yeah, I walk with the Devil
Yeah, I walk with the Devil
Yeah, I walk with the Devil
Yeah, I walk with the Devil

So I walk with the the Devil
My rivals best be careful
'Cause when you're already dead
There's no gun at your head
You're finally free

I shook hands with the Devil
Ah, this town best be careful
'Cause when you're already dead
There's no rope for your neck
You're finally free

Devil, I walk with the Devil

Yeah, I walk with the Devil
I walk with the Devil

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Karliene's song "Walk with the Devil" tell the story of a broken man who has been through the wars, both literal and metaphorical. He acknowledges that he was never a good boy, but he has found solace in walking with the Devil. He warns his rivals to be careful, but he himself is already dead and therefore free from the fear of death. The Devil has become his companion and his guide, and through this union he has found a new sense of freedom.

The broken man's past is hinted at in the line "Ones with bullets and ones in my head." He has clearly been through physical battles, but the ones in his head suggest that he has also struggled with mental health issues, such as PTSD. The woman in the song - Grace - has helped him to heal, but now he is alone again, and the "shots are deafening" - whether these are literal gunshots or metaphorical ones is left up to interpretation.

The chorus is where the true meaning of the song comes to light - the man is unafraid of death because he is already dead, and as such he has found a new sense of freedom. He has walked with the Devil and shaken hands with him, and in doing so he has found a release from the pain and suffering of his past.
