Patty Hearst
Karma to Burn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Another winter has past and gone
All his desires still remained
Having God on the run
Another winter's on it's way

They like to suck the dead to life
Smell the rot inside
Hearts, hands, eyes
Eyes, eyes, eyes

Too many people have lost their souls
Damned to a life of decay

Been a lover for far too long
Without the power to refrain

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Karma to Burn's song "Patty Hearst's Closet Mantra" seem to revolve around the topic of decay and how it affects various aspects of life. The opening lines demonstrate an obvious desire to move forward and shake off the vestiges of winter, but despite this desire, the singer seems to be stuck in the same place with the same desires. The line "having God on the run" could be interpreted to mean that despite their efforts to move on, they feel as though they are being chased by an unattainable force that they are chasing. The metaphor of winter suggests a sort of unending coldness and the lack of growth that is paired with it.

The second stanza further delves into the theme of decay, as the singer describes how "they" (presumably other people) like to "suck the dead to life" - this could be interpreted as people who feed off the misfortunes of others to further their own goals or desires. The mention of "smell the rot inside" adds to the decay imagery, suggesting that there is something foul at the heart of these people. The repetition of "eyes" at the end seems to suggest vigilance against these corrupt individuals.

The final stanza speaks to the idea of not succumbing to decay; the singer states that too many people have lost their souls to it. They describe themselves as having been a "lover" for too long, which could be interpreted to mean that they have loved too much life when they should have been concentrating on growth and moving forward. The final lines suggest that they feel powerless to change their situation, but they will not give in without a fight. Overall, the lyrics paint a picture of a person who is fighting against stagnation and decay and is determined to continue moving forward despite the obstacles they face.
