Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Karunesh's song "Punjab" paint a vivid picture of love and longing. The opening lines invite the listener to journey among the stars, with the hope that the heart will dance and come alive amidst the blossoming spring. There is a sense of urgency in the call to come, as if there is a desire to escape and explore beyond the confines of ordinary life. The repetition of "aao huzoor tumko sitaron mein le chalo" feels like a chant, as if the singer is trying to manifest the desire for adventure.

As the song progresses, we hear the phrase "hai ve mere, daadia rabba," which roughly translates to "My Lord, my father, hear my plea." This line, paired with "babul tere ginane lejaania haye," which translates to "I sing of your departure, father," speaks to a deep sense of loss or separation. The lyric "nehelate jo teri laado" suggests that the singer is remembering a cherished loved one, perhaps a mother or sister. The song goes on to describe the pain of separation, with "pi jo teri laado 'tiyan jab miya, des tod diya" indicating that the singer's beloved was taken away from them against their will.

Overall, "Punjab" is a beautiful and emotional song that speaks to the universal experience of longing for adventure and connection, but also the pain of separation and loss. It's a reminder to cherish those we love and hold onto them tightly, as we never know when they may be taken away from us.

I have been looking for this song for YEARS. I heard it when I was quite young and it hit me in a weird way even though I didn't know anything about India or know any Indian people. Then I lost the song but always remembered this song called "Punjab" but had no way to find it. Funny enough I ended up marrying a Punjabi guy in 2019 and since 5 years of being with him I was still searching for this song and even he didn't know what I was talking about.

The very fact that you said "I've been looking for this song for years" is testament to how beautiful this tune is. Listen to this when you drive especially on a highway. ✌
