The Duke
Kasabian Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Soon keep a little chance
Knowing there's something
Gonna let you hide
Soon wanna keep my eyes
They're so unsocial
They sell our souls

Soon keep a little chance
Knowing there's something
Gonna let you hide
Soon wanna keep my eyes
They're so unsocial
They sell our souls

Soon keep a little chance
Knowing there's something
Gonna let you hide
Soon wanna keep my eyes

They're so unsocial
They sell our souls

Overall Meaning

"The Duke" is a song by British rock band Kasabian, known for their unique blend of dance and rock music, and it was released on their fourth studio album, "Velociraptor!" The lyrics of this song are open to interpretation, but a common view is that they reflect the feeling of alienation and detachment experienced by people in modern society. The opening lines of the song, "Soon keep a little chance, knowing there's something gonna let you hide," suggest a sense of apprehension and fear, as if the singer is afraid of what might happen if they reveal their true self or feelings. The line "they're so unsocial, they sell our souls," could imply that modern society encourages us to be unsocial and disconnected from each other, in exchange for material success or security, which is a theme that comes up frequently in Kasabian's songs.

Other interpretations of this song could relate to the band's own struggles with fame and success, as the lyrics suggest a sense of disillusionment with the music industry and the pressure to conform to certain expectations. The repeated "soon keep a little chance, knowing there's something gonna let you hide" could reflect the idea of keeping a small part of yourself hidden from the public eye, or trying to hold onto your own identity despite the demands of the music industry.

Overall, "The Duke" is a complex, multi-layered song that invites listeners to explore different interpretations and meanings, depending on their own experiences and perspectives.

I suppose in early days kasabian were heavily influenced by trip hop. ID, Running Battle and this track clearly shows this influence.

Yes! Someone uploaded this one again. It's been stuck in my head forever and all the old videos of this or respective channels got blocked or deleted apparently.

@lorigordon943

This track disappeared from YouTube for a couple years and then I found it was back

@neeossenbeck8234

A few of the synths ended up in Running Battle, but I can't fathom why this beauty was never released in its own right. Not even as an obscure B-side. Such a waste!

@kingmarble3400

This sounds like I.D for two reasons:
1. The drum sequence is almost the exact same
2. About 1 minute 30 into the song there is a solo synth part that sounds similar to I.D
