Glass
Kasabian [48:13] Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We are going nowhere fast
Are we made of glass?
No one knows, no one knows

Play out at the highest level
Something never sung before
Stalk by, human interaction
Keep them in their corners

We can start and turn off everything
It's all the same, don't say I'll laugh again

Save me
Oh, come on and save me
From this world
Tell me
'Cause I need to know
I'm not alone

We are taught to watch the puppets
Not the hands controlling
Do you think if we pull out the rug
The world would stop revolving?

We can start and turn off everything
It's all the same, don't say I'll laugh again

Save me
Oh, come on and save me
From this world
Save me
Oh, come on and save me
From this world

Tell me
'Cause I need to know
I'm not alone

We are going nowhere fast
Are we made of glass?
No one knows, no one knows

A wise man told me that we are born with wings
But never taught to fly
Doesn't that make you wonder why
Is it to prevent us from falling out of the sky
Or is it to stop us from soaring too high
So let me ask you this
Are you running around in a circle, going nowhere fast?
'Cause when you look at the man in the mirror
He's made of nothing but glass
You're never aware that mountains don't move themselves
Tectonic plates make them shift
That all it took was a staff to part the Red Sea
All it took was a bus to Montgomery
A single woman who refused to give up her seat
We fought an entire army with a bouquet of flowers back in the '70's
But now you're taught to remain without will until you run out of energy
Afraid that if you strive for an ideal you end up like a Kennedy
It's like being on a treadmill every day but never losing any weight
'Cause to see success the food before you digest has to change
We're stressed and high, get depressed and die
But still afraid to question why
One of the biggest criminals I ever met wore a suit and tie

When did we stop believing? When did we stop marching?
When did we stop chanting?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Kasabian's song 'glass' explore the idea of feeling invisible and powerless in a world where we are constantly being controlled and manipulated by outside forces. The chorus "save me, oh come on and save me from this world" expresses the desire to break free from this cycle and find a sense of freedom and purpose. The line "we are taught to watch the puppets, not the hands controlling" suggests that we are not even aware of the ways in which we are being manipulated and our actions are dictated by external forces. The use of the metaphor "are we made of glass?" further highlights the fragility and vulnerability of humanity in this context.

The verse "a wise man told me that we are born with wings, but never taught to fly" adds a layer of complexity to the song, suggesting that our potential is being limited or even suppressed intentionally. The questioning of why we are not taught to fly implies that we are capable of so much more than we are lead to believe but are being held back. The lines "afraid that if you strive for an ideal you end up like a Kennedy, it's like being on a treadmill every day but never losing any weight" highlights the fear of standing out or challenging the status quo, and the feeling that any effort towards change is futile. The final line "when did we stop believing? when did we stop marching? when did we stop chanting?" poses a call to action, implying that it is time to start pushing back and fighting for what we believe in.

Overall, 'glass' is a powerful commentary on the state of humanity and the ways in which we are controlled and limited by outside forces. It's a rallying cry for people to break free from the cycle of manipulation and take control of their own lives.

"Glass"

We are going nowhere fast
Are we made of glass?
No one knows, no one knows

Played out at the highest levels
On their leather sofas
Stop all human interaction
Keep them in their comas

Make a start and turn off everything
It's only then you'll see your life begin.

Save me
Oh, come on and save me
From this world
Tell me
'Cause I need to know
I'm not alone

We are taught to watch the puppets
Not the hands controlling
Do you think if we pulled out the rug
The world would stop revolving?

Make a start and turn off everything
It's only then you'll see your life begin.

Save me

From this world
Save me

But now you're taught to remain a hamster on a wheel until you run out of energy
Afraid that if you strive for an ideal you end up like a Kennedy
It's like being on a treadmill every day but never losing any weight
'Cause to see success the food-for-thought you digest has to change
We're stressed then high
Get depressed then die
But still afraid to question why

When did we stop believing?
When did we stop marching?

@yomrwhite2211

Does anyone think that the whole album has a post-apocalyptic vibe

@starcharmed

"It's all the same, don't say I'll laugh again"
I really think it's "it's only then you'll see your life begin"

@pessimystica

I'm glad to see some people noticed how interesting the lyrics are, esp. the last part. It reminds me of an episode from this British show called Black Mirror where this black guy is apart of some world where people are literally slaves to a treadmill & they have to workout to earn "credits"... & I'll just leave it there.
