In 2009, she began appearing in a supporting role as Bonnie Bennett in The CW television network show, The Vampire Diaries.

Graham was born in Geneva, Switzerland and raised in Los Angeles, California. Her father, Joseph, is Liberian and her mother, Natasha, is Jewish (of half Russian and half Polish ancestry). Graham was born in Geneva, while her father was working as a journalist for the United Nations. Graham's father was a music executive and the godfather of two of Quincy Jones' children, while her grandfather was a UN Ambassador, serving for 40 years in The Netherlands, Sweden, Romania, and Kenya. Graham attended Hebrew school and speaks English, Spanish, and French, as well as some Portuguese, and Hebrew.

In addition to being a professional actress and dancer, Graham began to pursue a career as a musical artist. One of the first songs she wrote, entitled "Derailed", was featured in a Jean-Claude Van Damme film. In 2008, Graham completed a world tour with The Black Eyed Peas; she is featured in two songs "I Got It From My Mama" and "The Donque Song" featuring Snoop Dogg, released on will.i.am's solo release, Songs About Girls. In 2010, Graham released the single "Sassy". She then went on to release multiple covers including Paula Abdul's "Cold Hearted", which garnered Graham the attention of Paula Abdul. Graham contributed a cover of the classic Garbage song "Only Happy When It Rains" to the Vampire Diaries soundtrack for the December 2, 2010 episode titled "The Sacrifice".

People that are "stuck" being who society wants them to be, being who they were conditioned to be by associated peer groups, parents etc will not understand because they live in fear and are still seeking approval just to show parts of themselves. Looking for validation to tell them that what they are doing, saying, being is okay or not.

What Kat is doing is breaking the mold that she thought that she had to fit in , just as Miley Cyrus did, Britney Spears and as many people do. That are under the pressures of being in the spotlight and outside of it.

Hollywood has a habit of forcing celebrities to take on/uphold a particular persona, provoking an extreme reaction in opposition to it. It’s made worse, when you must consider your fan base — many of whom are influenced/guided by you. The pressure to not disappoint them is comparative to not wanting to disappoint yourself (specifically your younger self). It is that, by failing them you are failing you before. (So, what?) While it can cause you to push harder, you do risk becoming disingenuous. Always keep in mind, your journey of self-discovery involves only you. When you begin involving others it becomes less about you and more about who they need you to be. With that said, Kat Graham is not the alter ego… who and what she was made to represent is.

My criticism is not about how she looks; it was about how she explains or feels the need to explain how she looks. And it's not totally directed at her either; it's kind of a lamentable thing about society in general. Basically, I would love nothing more than to see a world of more people being comfortable with radical self-expression like hers. What she's doing is shocking and provocative to some people, but I just think it's beautiful and artistic, and art shouldn't have to explain itself. It's sad that she feels like she needs to explain herself. Grace Jones is probably a great example of a radically self-expressed black woman, and she just owned that shit and didn't really bother with dumb questions like "why?" or "what does it mean?" In no way would I want to change how Toro Gato looks or identifies now, I would've just changed the interview to be more focused on her new music with like, "Oh yeah, I'm Toro Gato now, so deal with it." To me, that would've been far more powerful and punk in a way, so it just seems like a missed opportunity is all. But again, you can totally disagree with me and say that the explanation she gave was actually necessary, and we can agree to disagree.

But her stories are so inconsistent and keep changing every time because what does Taro Gato got to do with a Zulu bridal headdress she wore in the other interview? Well.. as a mixed woman myself, it’s hard trying to find who we are. We’re torn between our ethnicities. I have DNA from a multitude of different countries in Africa. Do I have to pick one? Do I pick a culture I think is “cool”? Or do I just find a balance? We have no one to teach us anything about culture besides the internet. The only culture I know is my white side because it’s Spanish. I know cultures of Spain because my father is directly from there. I think Kat is trying to find herself. Maybe this was a stunt, maybe not. Maybe she’s just trying to figure it out like the rest of us. She was forced to be white presenting for 7+ years on TVD. it’s only natural that she’s finding ways to express herself and to find herself. To find a culture that wasn’t forced down her throat.
