The band released two more albums, Discouraged Ones (1998) and Tonight's Decision (1999), before settling into a stable quintet lineup for all of the 2000s. The band released four more albums with said lineup: Last Fair Deal Gone Down (2001), Viva Emptiness (2003), The Great Cold Distance (2006) and Night Is the New Day (2009), with the band slowly moving away from their metal sound while adding more progressive rock sounds to their work over time. While lineup changes started up again into the 2010s, Renkse and Nyström persisted, and the band continued on to release their ninth and tenth studio albums, Dead End Kings (2012) and The Fall of Hearts (2016). After touring in support of the album through 2017, the band entered a hiatus at the beginning of 2018. The band returned from their hiatus in February 2019, with their eleventh studio album, City Burials, released in April 2020 and twelfth studio album, Sky Void of Stars (2023).

Code Against The Code
Katatonia Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The cold you have come to find
Money going through the wire
The cold you have come to find
You once were the one who had it
The code against the code
So much to discover
Wait across the borderline
Soul thinned out
All the filth that soiled your baby
Spit it out when they're coming for you
Lowered's heir
The lyrics of Katatonia's song Code Against The Code are open to interpretation, but one way to look at it is through the lens of a person who has seen both success and failure, and is now reflecting on their past experiences. Money growing on a tree and money going through the wire can both be viewed as symbols of success, with the idea that the singer had once been wealthy and living comfortably. The reference to "the cold" may symbolize a harsh reality that the singer is now facing, a longing for something that was once attainable but now seems elusive.
The reference to "the code against the code" could mean many things, but one possible interpretation is that the singer is someone who had been following a set of rules or guidelines that were successful in the past, but have now become obsolete. They may now be searching for a new code to live by, one that will help them find meaning and success once again. The lines "wait so much to discover, wait across the borderline" may suggest that the singer is on the verge of a new discovery, one that could lead to their redemption.
Overall, the lyrics of Code Against The Code are open to interpretation, but they paint a vivid picture of a person who has struggled in the past and is now searching for a new way forward.
