Deadhouse
Katatonia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somehow better without this
Headlights fuck the city
Somewhere I'm broken
No sensations nevermore
What do you say when you speak
I sense no time
Discouraged television sleep
Not awake until it's dark
Somehow I never leave
This dead house
Somehow I don't mind being gone
And if you think you've seen me

I have to prove you
That you're wrong

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Deadhouse" by Katatonia depict the singer's angst and detachment from the world around him. The opening lines, "Somehow better without this, headlights fuck the city," express the feeling of being overwhelmed and worn out by the constant noise and chaos of urban life. The singer feels broken, sensing no time and lacking any sensations. The line, "No sensations nevermore," suggests a numbness and lack of emotion that the singer is experiencing.

The song goes on to describe the singer's sleepless nights spent in front of the television, feeling discouraged and disengaged from the world. The lines, "Not awake until it's dark, somehow I never leave this deadhouse," convey the sense of being stuck in a routine of despair and isolation. However, the singer also admits that he doesn't mind being gone and disconnected from society, suggesting a sort of comfort in the numbness and detachment he is feeling. The final lines, "And if you think you've seen me, I have to prove you that you're wrong," suggest that the singer is actively avoiding others and trying to remain hidden and isolated.

Overall, "Deadhouse" is a powerful and poignant exploration of isolation, numbness, and detachment. It conveys the sense of being trapped in a cycle of despair and disconnection, and the struggle to break free from it.

Nedense bu olmadan daha iyi
Farlar becerir şehri
Bir yerde yarım kalmışım
Hiç duyu yok bir daha

Konuştuğunda ne dersin
Hiç zaman sezmem
Cesareti kırılmış televizyon uykusu
Uyanık değil karanlık olana kadar

Nedense hiç terkedemem
Bu ölü evini
Nedense aldırmam gitmiş olmaya
Ve eğer düşünüyorsan beni gördüğünü
Kanıtlamak zorundayım sana
Hatalı olduğunu

@withinspace

This is one of my all time favorite songs. When I first heard it I would play it over and over. It never gets old.

@TheSuicider81

Same here. First heard it on a Century Media compilation I believe with other great songs like The Suicider by Sentenced way back in 1999 or so and fell in love with it then. This song is very nostalgic to me.

Hope you're still around to read my comment 14 years later =)

@@TheSuicider81 Yeah, I had that comp and it was on constant repeat for me too. Suicider and Deadhouse were massive standout tracks that changed a lot of my view of guitar, bands and music in general. Hearing this song instantly takes me back to drifting off to sleep to this song soooo many years ago.

@@TheSuicider81 Thanks for the reply. This is my new account, I'm the same person. I also had many of the Century Media compilations. This one was on the 5th one. I defy. There were many incredibly good songs on that album. Opeth - when was my favorite. As well asmCryptopsy – White Worms, Old Man's Child - Fall of Man. My friend and I could play the suicider over and over. They have another good song called Warrior of Life I discovered from these compilations. I like your username, seems we were born in the same year. Cheers friend.

@TheSuicider81 I liked Brave Murder Day and Sentenced's Down a wee bit better but this particular song (also Saw You Drown) is amazing! I must be around 2 years older 😅

Songs like this make me happy to be alive. Strange considering this song as all Katatonia songs deals with severe unhappiness. As for everyone choosing this album as their favourite I am not sure. I love this band to the point I cannot choose any one album. Everything from Dance Of December Souls to their most recent offerings offer me something I cannot find anywhere else. Beauty through misery. Brilliance through sadness. Fantastic stuff.
