The band released two more albums, Discouraged Ones (1998) and Tonight's Decision (1999), before settling into a stable quintet lineup for all of the 2000s. The band released four more albums with said lineup: Last Fair Deal Gone Down (2001), Viva Emptiness (2003), The Great Cold Distance (2006) and Night Is the New Day (2009), with the band slowly moving away from their metal sound while adding more progressive rock sounds to their work over time. While lineup changes started up again into the 2010s, Renkse and Nyström persisted, and the band continued on to release their ninth and tenth studio albums, Dead End Kings (2012) and The Fall of Hearts (2016). After touring in support of the album through 2017, the band entered a hiatus at the beginning of 2018. The band returned from their hiatus in February 2019, with their eleventh studio album, City Burials, released in April 2020 and twelfth studio album, Sky Void of Stars (2023).

Dispossession
Katatonia Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It is to feel a filter in me
It is to leave the lights that I saw
It is to ask: is it easy to go
In this dead hour
Here with you
Seconds are worthless
When all is blank
Minutes are worthless
How long will it take until
There will be room enough for hope
It is so sad to see
Dispossession
It has become my obsession
It is to have a knife in my back
It is to say my soul got a crack
The lyrics of Katatonia's song Dispossession are filled with emotional depth and complexity. The opening lines "It is to see a traitor go free, it is to feel a filter in me" speak to a feeling of betrayal, the sense that the world is not what it seems and that the singer has been deceived by someone they trusted. They feel a "filter" within themselves, suggesting that they are no longer able to fully trust their own perceptions or sense of reality.
The subsequent lines "it is to leave the lights that I saw, it is to ask: is it easy to go" convey a sense of loss and uncertainty. The singer is forced to leave behind the familiar comforts of the past, and is left unsure of what their future holds. The repeated refrain of "it is so sad to see dispossession, it has become my obsession" suggests that this sense of dislocation and disconnection has become all-consuming for the singer, an emotional state they are unable to escape from.
The song's repeated references to time speak to the weight of the singer's experience, the way in which their trauma and pain seem to stretch out endlessly before them. The use of the phrase "dead hour" adds to the sense of stillness and stagnation, as if the singer is trapped in a moment of grief and unable to move forward.
