Houdini
Kate Bush Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wait at the table,
And hold hands with weeping strangers
Wait for you to join the group

The tambourine jingle-jangles
The medium roams and rambles
Not taken in, I break the circle
I want this man
To go away now

With a kiss
I'd pass the key
And feel your tongue
Teasing and receiving.
With your spit
Still on my lip
You hit the water
Him and I in the room
To prove you are with us too

He's using code that only you and I know
This is no trick of his
This is your magic

I'd catch the cues
Watching you
Hoping you'd do something wrong

Everybody thinks you'll never make it
But every time you escape

'Rosabel believe,
Not even eternity
Can hold Houdini!'

"Rosabel, believe!"

Through the glass
I'd watch you breathe
("Not even eternity")
Bound and drowned
And paler than you've ever been
("will hold Houdini!")

With your life
The only thing in my mind
We pull you from the water

(Houdini!)

You ("Hou-di-ni")
And I and Rosabel believe

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Kate Bush's song Houdini convey a surreal and eerie atmosphere. The singer describes waiting at a table while holding hands with "weeping strangers" for someone to join the group. The tambourine jingles in the background as the medium roams around seemingly aimlessly. However, when the medium finally speaks, the singer is not fooled and breaks the circle because he knows the code that only he and the person he's waiting for understands. This man who he's waiting for is Houdini, the famous magician and escape artist who has supposedly died.

The second stanza mentions the "kiss" that would "pass the key" which is a reference to a famous legend regarding Houdini's death. Houdini's wife challenged the spectators that if they sent a certain secret code message to her through Houdini, she would know that he was communicating from beyond the grave. The message was never received, and the legend goes that Houdini's spirit could only be released from the afterlife by passing a kiss from his wife.

The final lines ("You and I and Rosabel believe") most likely allude to the power of belief and the perseverance of the human spirit. Houdini is a symbol of persistence and resilience, and his story serves as a reminder that anything can be accomplished with enough willpower and determination.
