Bush began writing songs at 11. She was signed to EMI Records after Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour helped produce a demo tape. Her debut album, The Kick Inside, was released in 1978. Bush slowly gained artistic independence in album production and has produced all her studio albums since The Dreaming (1982). She took a hiatus between her seventh and eighth albums, The Red Shoes (1993) and Aerial (2005). Bush drew attention again in 2014 with her concert residency Before the Dawn, her first show since 1979's The Tour of Life.
The TV series "Stranger Things" used Bush's "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" in Season 4. As a result of the resurgence of interest, in 2022 the song reached #1 on the UK charts, 37 years after its initial release, and generated 100s of millions of streams.
Bush's eclectic and experimental musical style, unconventional lyrics, performances, and literary themes have influenced a diverse range of artists. She has been nominated for 13 British Phonographic Industry accolades, winning for Best British Female Artist in 1987, and has been nominated for three Grammy Awards. In 2002, Bush was recognized with an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. Bush was appointed a CBE in the 2013 New Year Honours for services to music. She was nominated three times for induction in the 2018, 2021, and 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
I'm Still Waiting

Somewhere a door is closing
Somewhere somebody dies
Somewhere a newborn baby cries
Maybe the love has gone
But there's still a heart that's beating
Though the clouds have come
The storm is coming back
Maybe you'll be coming back
'Cause I'm still waiting
Baby, well I'm still waiting
Mmmna mmmna mmmna mmmnamm
Baby, well I'm still waiting
Somewhere a door is opening
Maybe the love has gone
But there's still a heart that's beating
Though the clouds have come
Maybe the sun will come out
Maybe you'll be coming back
'Cause there's still a heart that's beating
Though the clouds have come
Maybe the sun will come out
Maybe you'll be coming back
There's still a heart that's beating
Maybe the sun will come out
They say the storm will be coming back
Maybe you'll be coming back 'Cause I'm still waiting
Mmmna mmmna mmmna mmmna
Baby, well I'm still waiting
Ooh, I'm waiting
Mmmmmmmmoooh
YAYAYAYAYAYA!
Oh, I'm waiting
Oh
The lyrics of Kate Bush's song "I'm Still Waiting" are enveloped in a feeling of uncertainty and waiting. The first verse evokes the opening and closing of doors, which can signify beginnings or endings. The mention of death and birth also contributes to the idea of cycles and uncertainty. The chorus appears to address a particular person, with whom the love has gone, yet there is still hope. The singer seems to be waiting for this person to return, as indicated by the repetition of "maybe you'll be coming back," and their heartbeat persists despite the presence of clouds and a coming storm.
The verses and chorus convey a sense of longing and searching for something or someone. The opening and closing of doors and the cycle of life imply that the singer is caught in a limbo, unsure of where they stand or what the future holds. Nevertheless, they remain steadfast in their waiting, holding on to hope despite the possibility of disappointment. The repetition of the phrase "I'm still waiting" emphasizes the frustration and the passage of time.
Overall, "I'm Still Waiting" seems to be a plea for someone to return, whether it's a lover, a friend, or some other significant person in the singer's life. The uncertainty and ambiguity of the verses contrast with the steadfastness of the chorus, creating a tension that reflects the singer's emotional state.
