Lake Tahoe
Kate Bush Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lake Tahoe.
Cold mountain water. Don't ever swim there.
Just stand on the edge and look in there.
And you might see a woman down there.

They say some days, up she comes, up she rises, as if out of nowhere.
Wearing Victorian dress.
She was calling her pet, "Snowflake! Snowflake!"
Tumbling like a cloud that has drowned in the lake.

Just like a poor, porcelain doll...
Her eyes are open but no-one's home.
The clock has stopped.
So long she's gone.

No-one's home.
Her old dog is sleeping.
His legs are frail now.
But when he dreams,

He runs...
Along long beaches and sticky fields.
Through the Spooky Wood looking for her.
The beds are made. The table is laid.

The door is open - someone is calling: It's a woman.
"Here boy, here boy! You've come home!
I've got an old bone and a biscuit and so much love.
Miss me? Did you miss me?

Here's the kitchen - There's your basket.
Here's the hall - That's where you wait for me.
Here's the bedroom - You're not allowed in there.
Here's my lap - That's where you lay your head.

Here boy, oh you're a good boy.

You've come home.
You've come home."

Overall Meaning

Kate Bush’s song Lake Tahoe is a haunting and ethereal track. The lyrics evoke a sense of mystery and melancholy. The song is about a woman who drowned in the cold mountain water of Lake Tahoe. The song advises the listener not to swim in the lake, but rather to stand on the edge and look in. This is because, according to the lyrics, the woman’s ghost is said to come up out of the lake, wearing Victorian dress and calling her pet “Snowflake.”

The lyrics of the song describe the woman as a porcelain doll, with open eyes but no soul. Her dog is also mentioned, and it is revealed that the dog dreams of running on the beach and through fields in search of his owner. The woman calls out to her dog, telling him that he has come home and that she has an old bone and a biscuit for him. She tells him where his basket is, where he can wait for her, and where he is not allowed to go.

The song is a beautiful and poignant meditation on loss and longing. It is also full of vivid imagery and poetic language, making it one of Kate Bush’s most haunting and memorable songs.

This is such a beautiful ode to a dogs life and their relationship to humans "I've got an old bone and biscuit and so much love" heartbreakingly beautiful

@Hugo_Le_Mignon

How can you not like this? ...it's pure love, poetry, majestic, incredible way of doing music...

@Missjunebugfreak

50 Words For Snow is such an underappreciated album. IMO, it's one of the most beautiful pieces of work she's ever put out. And I say this as a fan who adores her earlier work as well.

@MichaelFlynn0

Agreed. It will age well.

@GravityBoy72

It's an amazing piece of work/art.

@elm1230

What's with all the criticism? This, and all of Kate's work is amazing! I can tell a lot of criticism comes from people who are fans of her more mainstream works, which I'm not knocking, but it's clear they aren't really familiar with just how dynamic she is. And on another note, Kate Bush makes music because she loves it -A TRUE ARTIST! She's not a slave to critics nor fans. That's why she can go on hiatus for a while and come back with something completely new,regardless if it's well received.

@joannadunne1347

I love all her music. I'm addicted and I miss our dog Katie and my cats Katie, tootsie, sooty, fluffy, snoopy, tipsey and Tom and Jerry!

@GravityBoy72

This album is pure magic.
Ignore the people who have no idea.

A stunning and very moving song from Kate. So much unconditional love from our two dogs that some people just don't understand. Snow is a sublime album from a truly original artist. Her voice and piano are beautiful - please come to New Zealand Kate.

@colinecollard533

Unconditional love is a subservient slave mentality people are looked down upon for. That's the kind of people that are abused, battered wives and become doormats, even to those they love like dogs.

So who wants that kind of unconditional love?? Maybe a person that can't get along with people or somebody that is socially inept. Bear in mind that dogs "love" their owners regardless if they are drugdealers or childmolesters. Again any person behaving this way would be considered a fool or just needy, so why praise such behavior from a being of even lower intelligence?

Btw, Kate Bush won't ever tour the world and she won't even tour her own country as all the concert she's doing now are in London. So you keep dreaming.
