Love and Anger
Kate Bush Lyrics

It's so deep I don't think that I can speak about it
It could take me all of my life
But it would only take a moment to
Tell you what I'm feeling
But I don't know if I'm ready yet
You come walking into this room
What would I do without you?
Take away the love and the anger
And a little piece of hope holding us together
Looking for a moment that'll never happen
Living in the gap between past and future
Take away the stone and the timber
And a little piece of rope won't hold it together
If you can't tell your sister
If you can't tell a priest
'Cause it's so deep you don't think that you can speak about it
To anyone
And you tell it to your heart?
Can you find it in your heart
To let go of these feelings
Like a bell to a Southerly wind?
We could be like two strings beating
Speaking in sympathy
What would we do without you?
Two strings speak in sympathy
Take away the love and the anger
And a little piece of hope holding us together
Looking for a moment that'll never happen
Living in the gap between past and future
Take away the stone and the timber
And a little piece of rope won't hold it together
We're building a house of the future together
(What would we do without you?)
Well, if it's so deep you don't think that you can speak about it
Just remember to reach out and touch the past and the future
Well, if it's so deep you don't think you can speak about it
Don't ever think that you can't change the past and the future
You might not, not think so now
But just you wait and see, someone will come to help you
The first verse of Kate Bush's Love and Anger describes a feeling that is buried deep inside the singer, so deep that she doesn't think she can even speak about it. It's something that could take her an entire lifetime to process fully, but at the same time, she feels that with the right person present, she could let go of the feeling in just an instant. The verses build towards the chorus, which is a plea to "Take away the love and the anger, and a little piece of hope holding us together." In other words, the love and anger present between the singer and her partner are what's keeping them together, but it's also what's holding her back from sharing her innermost feelings.
This concept of being caught between opposing forces continues throughout the rest of the song. The singer is "Living in the gap between past and future," and the idea of taking away "the stone and the timber" calls to mind the image of a house falling apart without its foundational support. The overall message of the song seems to be that letting go of deeply-held emotions is incredibly difficult, but also necessary for moving forward into the future.

Bear R
She has lots of bad songs, but when she gets it right, she's not good - she's great.
Petunia Amber Supreme Baxter
No!
Monica Lillis
@MagicPants My favourite Album ' The Red Shoes' absolutely beautiful. ' Song of Solomon'.
Camzcer
she has written masterpieces but not that many. no one writes only gold. like Suspended In Gaffa is really offputting because of the unnecessary shrillyness, really weird choices were made in The Dreaming (song), in a couple tracks her voices change too quickly and often to the point where it sounds really forced, some of her tracks feel like instrumental air as in they just feel like background noise, etc
Kate Bush is my favorite artist of all time btw. she's an artpop goddess. but she's not perfect
Terry Smith
I still have my Sensual World LP, what an astoundingly beautiful album, I especially loved the additional backup vocals given by the Trio Bulgarka on many tracks - so haunting and magical.
Alana Dill
It gives me joy that a whole new generation of Kate fans is just discovering her marvels.
Garrett Johnson
Something about her voice, regardless of the song, always brings me to the verge of tears when hearing it. She is one of the most necessary artists the world has ever produced and that is in no way hyperbole. She's a gem.
TV Title Champion
She is. Her voice has the timbre of the ideal female partner imploring her loved one to be better, cajoling to their relations to new heights, coupled with a purr to sooth when things don't work out. I'd believe her if she told me everything's gonna be all right.
