Running Up That Hill
Kate Bush Lyrics
It doesn't hurt me
Do you want to feel how it feels?
Do you want to know, know that it doesn't hurt me?
Do you want to hear about the deal that I'm making?
You, it's you and me
And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that building
See if I only could, oh
You don't want to hurt me
But see how deep the bullet lies
Unaware I'm tearing you asunder
Ooh, there is thunder in our hearts
Is there so much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don't we?
You, it's you and me
It's you and me, won't be unhappy
And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building
Say, if I only could, oh
You
It's you and me
It's you and me, won't be unhappy
Oh come on, baby
Oh come on, darling
Let me steal this moment from you now
Oh come on, angel
Come on, come on, darling
Let's exchange the experience, oh
And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
I'd be running up that road
Be running up that hill
With no problems
Said, if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
I'd be running up that road
Be running up that hill
With no problems
So if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
I'd be running up that road
Be running up that hill
With no problems
Said, if I only could
I'd be running up that hill
With no problems
(If I only could, I'd be running up that hill)
(If I only could, I'd be running up that hill)

Bush has since released 25 UK Top 40 singles, including the Top 10 hits "The Man with the Child in His Eyes", "Babooshka", "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)", "Don't Give Up" (a duet with Peter Gabriel) and "King of the Mountain". All 10 of her studio albums reached the UK Top 10, including the UK number one albums Never for Ever (1980), Hounds of Love (1985) and the compilation The Whole Story (1986). She was the first British solo female artist to top the UK album charts and the first female artist to enter the album chart at number one.
Bush began writing songs at 11. She was signed to EMI Records after Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour helped produce a demo tape. Her debut album, The Kick Inside, was released in 1978. Bush slowly gained artistic independence in album production and has produced all her studio albums since The Dreaming (1982). She took a hiatus between her seventh and eighth albums, The Red Shoes (1993) and Aerial (2005). Bush drew attention again in 2014 with her concert residency Before the Dawn, her first shows since 1979's The Tour of Life.
Bush's eclectic and experimental musical style, unconventional lyrics, performances, and literary themes have influenced a diverse range of artists. She has been nominated for 13 British Phonographic Industry accolades, winning for Best British Female Artist in 1987, and has been nominated for three Grammy Awards. In 2002, Bush was recognised with an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. Bush was appointed a CBE in the 2013 New Year Honours for services to music. She was nominated three times for induction in the 2018, 2021 and 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Same here. I’m sitting around with COVID while my partner is at her place, both watching ST, and suddenly we’re both going “KATE BUSH! What a great choice!”
We had both kinda forgotten about this song. I don’t know how.

It would take hours to express what this song means to me. Bought it on casette when it was released, bought it on CD too. I still listen to this song regularly. Love it!

Having been listening to Kate Bush since I heard her on college radio as a 14 yr old back in 1983. First song I heard was Breathing and it was amazing, still is. She's been super slept on for decades and glad that she's being discovered by a new generation. Her talent deserves it.

Stranger Things got me wishing I could go back to the 80's / 90's. Those were simpler times... Nothing was instant, and so they were special. We'd have to borrow movies, or look at TV guides and wait for it to air. We played outdoors all day, go to museums, read goosebumps and get spooked, explored nature, had group picnics, many friends, there was a real sense of community... If you liked someone you had to tell them, there was no sliding into DMs or tinder. It's so different now. I'm isolated, and just work in front of a computer, my family is abroad, most people are for themselves, and I can't say I have any friends on a rainy day. I'm grateful to Stranger Things for letting me relive some of that nostalgia.
