refuse to come to me
I still know I can see
Jamie
And if I never make it
Anchored in this town
At least I will have found
Jamie let's dance in the middle of the road
During peak hour traffic
Jamie let's roll around in circles in this shopping trolley
We'll stare up at the sky
Or curl up somewhere dry
When it's rainy
Jamie
And if ever grow up
Do what I'm s'posed to do
I'll wear a dress for you
Jamie
Jamie let's dance in the middle of the road
During peak hour traffic
Jamie let's roll around in circles in this shopping trolley
We'll stare up at the sky
Or curl up somewhere dry
When it's raining
Jamie
Kate Miller-Heidke's song "Jamie" is a wistful, reflective tune that speaks to the idea of nostalgia and the longing for a simpler time. The song is centered around the idea of Jamie, an old friend, and the memories that they share. The first verse of the song speaks to the idea of holding on to memories, even when they are hard to grasp onto. The line "If the pictures in my head refuse to come to me" suggests that sometimes the memories we hold onto can be elusive, but regardless, Jamie remains a fixed point and a grounding force.
The chorus is where the song really takes off, with Kate imagining all sorts of whimsical adventures with Jamie. They dance in the middle of the road during rush hour traffic, they roll around in shopping trolleys, they stare up at the sky in wonder. The whimsy of this imagery is contrasted with the quiet melancholy of the verses, making for an emotionally complex and satisfying piece.
