the scientist
Katelyn Epperly Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are

I had to find you
Tell you I need you
Tell you I've set you apart

Tell me your secrets
And ask me your questions
Oh, let's go back to the start

Running in circles
Coming up tails
Heads on the science apart

Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard

Oh take me back to the start

I was just guessing
At numbers and figures
Pulling the puzzles apart

Questions of science
Science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart

Oh tell me you love me
Come back and haunt me
Oh and I rush to the start

Running in circles
Chasing our tails
Coming back as we are

Nobody said it was easy
Oh, it's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard

I'm going back to the start

Oh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Ah ooh ooh ooh ooh

Oh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Oh ooh ooh ooh ooh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Katelyn Epperly's song The Scientist depict the regret and longing of a person as they try to reconnect with a loved one. The first stanza begins with the person trying to make amends for something they did wrong with the words, "come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry." They go on to express how they feel about the person, telling them that they do not know how lovely they are. In the second stanza, they reveal that they have been searching for the person so that they can tell them that they need them, and that they are special to them. They want to go back to the beginning of their relationship, when things were simpler and they were happy.

The third stanza is a plea for the person to open up to them and to ask questions, as they both try to figure out what went wrong. They acknowledge that the journey will not be easy, "running in circles, coming up tails," but they still want to try because they believe that their bond is worth fighting for. The fourth stanza highlights the frustration of the situation, as they speak of the challenges they are facing, with "nobody said it would be this hard." Finally, the song ends with them wanting to go back to the start, where they first met, in the hope that they can reconnect and make things right.

She did not deserve to go home for this. She rocked it

I was always angered by the reaction to this performance by the judges. Katelyn did not deserve to win, but this was a brilliant performance. There is nothing wrong with toning down a performance.
