Son Of A Preacher Man
Katey Sagal Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Billy-Ray was a Preacher's son,
And when his daddy would visit he'd come along,
When they gathered round and started talking,
Cousin Billy would take me walking,
Through the back yard we'd go walking,
Then he'd look into my eyes,
Lord knows to my surprise:
The only one who could ever reach me,
Was the son of a preacher man,
The only boy who could ever teach me,
Was the son of a preacher man,
Yes he was, he was, oh yes he was.

Being good isn't always easy,
No matter how hard I tried,
When he started sweet talking to me,
he'd come tell me everything is alright,
he'd kiss and tell me everything is alright,
Can I get away again tonight?.

The only one who could ever reach me,
Was the son of a preacher man,
The only boy who could ever teach me,
Was the son of a preacher man,
Yes he was, he was, oh yes he was.

How well I remember,
The look that was in his eyes,
Stealing kisses from me on the sly,
Taking time to make time,
Telling me that he's all mine,
Learning from each others knowing,
Looking to see how much we'd grown.

The only one who could ever reach me,
Was the son of a preacher man,
The only boy who could ever teach me,

Was the son of a preacher man,
Yes he was, he was, oh yes he was.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Son of a Preacher Man" by Katey Sagal & The Forest Rangers depict a story of a young woman who falls in love with the son of her preacher. The song is about the excitement and thrill of forbidden love, especially since the young woman seems to have been trying hard to be good. When the preacher and his son would visit her, she would take walks with the son around the backyard. The son looks into the young woman's eyes and surprises her. She falls deeply in love with him and learns everything from him.

The song suggests that sometimes being good isn't easy, and people may fall in love with someone that society deems inappropriate. However, the young woman has found solace in the son of a preacher man. He is the only one who's ever reached her and taught her everything she knows. The chorus repeats the line "The only one who could ever reach me, Was the son of a preacher man", highlighting the young woman's love and dependence on her lover.

Overall, "Son of a Preacher Man" is a powerful song that speaks to the euphoria of forbidden love and the complexity of human emotions.

Forfuxakes

😂🤣👊

Donna

Nancy Sinatra sang it originally. It might have been Nancy’s version on SOA.

Paula Douglass

@Donna Nancy didn’t sound right and I started to comment Bobby Gentry but decided to fact check first. Glad I did cause I was wrong too. It was Dusty Springfield. Of course Nancy did “boots are made for walking” and “something special” and in my case Bobby gentry did “Ode to Billy Jo”.

Emilly Yelen

@Paula Douglass ofc it was dusty ffs

Tommy Vercetti
