Empty Threat
Kathleen Edwards Lyrics

They brought us here together
You know it's true
But this cold now it's getting warmer
Maybe come September I will feel brand new
I'm moving to America,
Moving to America,
It's an empty threat
In the city I once would never
I'm learning to say never never never ever
'Cause now I'm its favorite flower
I'm blooming through to the concrete cracks of this condo tower
[Repeat x2]
I'm moving to America,
Moving to America,
Moving to America,
It's an empty threat
[?] course of ours
[?] of thunder showers
I hit that head until it bled
I miss you sick goddammit
[Repeat x2]
I'm moving to America,
Moving to America,
Moving to America,
It's an empty threat
I'm moving to America,
Moving to America,
Moving to America,
It's not an empty threat
The hottest days of the summer
They brought us here together
You know it's true
In Kathleen Edwards's song "Empty Threat," the lyrics speak to feelings of discontentment, uncertainty, and unfulfilled promises. The opening lines set the scene for a summer romance that allowed the singer to meet someone new. However, despite the initial excitement, the truth is that it's an empty promise, and the singer finds herself longing for something more genuine. She sees that maybe things will get better in September, but it's not a certainty, and she's left to wonder if she'll ever find what she's looking for.
The repetition of "Moving to America" throughout the song implies a sense of restlessness and a desire for change. The singer tells herself that she's moving to America, but the truth is that it's an empty threat - something she doesn't quite believe herself. She can't bring herself to commit to the idea of starting over completely, but she still has a longing for something more fulfilling.
