In State
Kathleen Edwards Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can spot your kind a million miles away,
Buckle down boots and a bloodshot gaze.
You talk so sweet until the going gets tough,
The last job you pulled was never big enough.

Don't say you'll change after the next time.
You wouldn't even be yourself if you weren't telling a lie.
(Chorus)
'Cause I know where the cops hang out,
I know where you'll be found,
I know what you're all about.
I know when you're going down.

You only call me honey when we're alone,
Hiding at your place up on slack road.
You've got an answer for every little thing.
You can't even tell me where you've been.

My face couldn't make you leave it behind.
Maybe twenty years in state will change your mind.

(Chorus)

Don't say you'll change after the next time.
You wouldn't even be yourself if you weren't telling a lie.
Maybe 20 years in state will change your mind.

(Chorus)
I know you'll never change now.

I know my love was good enough,
I know you would have shed my blood,

I know you can't shut me up.
I know when you're going down.

Overall Meaning

"In State" by Kathleen Edwards is a song that highlights the singer's intuitive nature and her ability to recognize and identify a certain type of person. The first verse establishes this fact as she describes a person with "buckle down boots and a bloodshot gaze" who talks sweetly but can't handle difficult situations. The second verse focuses on the relationship between the singer and this person, who only calls her "honey" when they are alone and cannot account for their whereabouts. The chorus emphasizes the singer's familiarity with the wrongdoings of this person and her belief that they will get caught, stating that she knows "where the cops hang out" and "when you're going down."

The lyrics color the world of the song with a feeling of distrust and disillusionment. The person Edwards is singing about is clearly not trustworthy, and the singer seems to have experienced enough betrayal in the past to no longer have faith in this person changing their ways. The line "maybe twenty years in state will change your mind" is particularly damning, implying that the only way this person will stop their dishonest behavior is through incarceration.

Overall, "In State" is a gritty and gripping song that showcases Edwards' powerful voice and her ability to craft lyrics that paint a vivid picture. It's a song about mistrust and disappointment, but it also has an undercurrent of strength and resilience.

This was one of the very best songs of that decade. Amazing that it didn't catapult her into the stratosphere. The whole album was very good, a bit country besides In State, but very good.

Just rediscovered this and am rediscovering more from her - I remember thinking, when it came out, this was the saviour of Rock at the time. And yes I thought the band sounded alot like Tom Petty's. Which I also love. Thought I heard some 12 string in there but not sure, gets kind of country in a great wat. Also love her voice (better than Tom's LOL!) And looking at her in the videos.

I figured out something - the guitars on this must be using heavy compression, pedals. Colin! There''s no other way to get that Byrds sound on a six string. Probably a Dynacomp. I have one and it comes close. Man, that sound...reminds me of being a kid and hearing it on the AM radio for the first time, early 70s. Even though I didn't know anything then, I knew it was overdriven but not distorted, and never forgot it. Thank God I discovered guitar later.

Think she has an idea of how charismatic she looks when she sings? Jeez. Even better to watch than to just listen. But not necessary. Anyway, when I was little in the early seventies, there was a family that had two or three older redhead sisters as daughters. I was 4. Maybe that has something to do with it. I think one of them was named Kathleen too...
