Linden scored two hits on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 late in the 1950s. The first was "Billy", a song originally written in 1911; it hit #7 in 1958. The second was "Goodbye Jimmy, Goodbye", which rose to #11 in 1959. Both singles were released on Felsted Records and featured Joe Leahy's backing orchestra. "Goodbye Jimmy Goodbye" incorporated elements of two previous tunes - the British music hall song "Two Lovely Black Eyes" and the country song "Goodbye Little Darling". There were a few covers, the biggest of which was by Ruby Murray in the UK. At the time of her first hit single Kathy was a married woman in her 20s, but her record company wanted her to appear as a child due to her childish voice.

I remember this song well, and it is indeed the original! I was "Jimmy" then (now Jim or James), and one of my best friends was as well -- and I remember when my friend Jimmy enlisted in the Air Force, after our senior year, his mother dedicated this song to him.

Your comment is touching. But Jim, this is NOT the original and not even Kathy Linden. Surprised? (I was when I found out!) The original was released as Felsted 45-8571 with a flipside of "Heartaches At Sweet Sixteen." On that original hit version, Kathy sings "Wind is" in the line "Wind is a-blowin'" with a pause between those two words. In the version here, whoever is singing it (not Kathy) sings the line with no pause between those two words.

This hit by Kathy Linden went to #11 on the Top 40 charts. It would finish at #85 for the year, 1959.

Although I had heard of Kathy and her hit "Billy", I have never heard this song before today. Lovely; and I agree with MrLions49 - definitely a soulful ballad for a John Wayne western. :)

I actually like this version a little better. The speed is faster, and it is not quite so emotional and sad as the the other take. Probably recorded at the same studio session as the other more known, as the instrumentation seem to be the same. I love her voice as much as I love Julie London´s

That is what I thought. But I have been assured by someone very reliable (Kathy herself!) that the alternate take was done with a different singer. The circumstances remain a mystery. I wrote a longer comment here (new thread) which you can check out.

I forgot to add - the hit version is available on the UK Sepia CD "Popular Favourites Of Yesterday" available from Amazon UK and other outlets. On the alternate take posted here, her vocal falters in a number of spots, e.g, listen at 1:07 into the song. The hit version is a much smoother (and softer) vocal and the song has an early fade compared to this take.

I have looked her up on Wikipedia and then noticed a post about a radio show she did in 2015, it seems that she moved to California and recorded for Capital records, she now mainly writes songs for records and movies. Go there and click on the radio show and maybe you can go from there.

Try contacting her record label, she recorded for a sub-record label of Decca Records, if she is still receiving royalities from her records they should know where they are sending them to her.

Hi Ronnie. Actually I have an album by Ruby Wright titled Ruby Wright Regular Gal which has a version of the song perhaps was not a hit for her. She also sang the English version of the Tommy Dee song "Three Stars" Anyway I have always liked the song.
