Do You Want To Build a Snowman?
Katie Lopez Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you wanna build a snowman?
Come on let's go and play
I never see you anymore come out the door it's like you've gone away
We used to be best buddies but now we're not, I wish you would tell me why!
Do you wanna build a snowman, it doesn't have to be a snowman!
(Go away Anna!) Ok bye!

Do you wanna build a snowman or ride are bikes around the halls?
I think some company is overdue I've started talking to the pictures on the walls.
(Hang in there jones!)
It gets a little lonely, all these empty rooms
Just watching the hours tick by!!!
(Tik tok tik tok tik tok tik tok)

Elsa, please I know your in there
people are asking where you been they say have courage and I'm trying to
I'm right out here for you just let me in!!!
We only have eachother
It's just you and me

What are we going to do?
Do you wanna build a snowman?

Overall Meaning

Katie Lopez's song "Do You Want To Build A Snowman" from the movie Frozen perfectly captures the complexities of familial relationships. The song is sung by Anna, the younger sister to Elsa who has isolated herself from the world after accidentally using her power to create a permanent winter. Anna yearns for the close relationship they shared as children and tries to reach out to her sister who has locked herself away. The song starts with Anna asking Elsa to come outside to play, to which Elsa replies rudely and dismisses her plea. Anna is confused as to why Elsa has grown distant and wishes to reconnect with her. The lyrics show Anna's struggles to help Elsa overcome her anxieties and seems willing to do whatever it takes to get her sister to come out and play such as building a snowman.

In the second verse, Anna laments the loneliness she feels due to Elsa's isolation, indicating that they both used to have each other's company. The line "It gets a little lonely, all these empty rooms, Just watching the hours tick by!!!" portrays Anna's sadness due to her sister's absence. She starts talking to the portraits on the walls that depict the family depictions.

In the final verse, Anna pleads with Elsa to let her in, as she is the only person left in her life she can rely on at the moment. She asks Elsa to build a snowman with her, something they used to do as children, in a bid to revive their relationship. The song encapsulates the theme of family, loneliness, isolation and the quest for reconnection.
